I was just browsing this thread. I am new to chickens and was wondering why you would use a chicken panty in the first place.

    Rolling around like a weirdo?

My Silkies do it and get completely filthy (they are white). But then an hour later they are perfectly clean again. Weird. Vivienne in Boulder

Problem getting chickens to use Chicken Nipple Waterer

I made a waterer out of a bucket and nipple style waterers like this: http://www.amazon.com/Gallon-Chicken-Poultry-Watering-Nipples/dp/B004TZK9AI I showed them how to use it but it doesn't seem like they were entirely catching on. I watched them for a while and a few went up to it to get water...

Is it true some predators can break through chicken wire?

Have you considered hardware cloth? It isn't cloth, but a welded wire mesh with squares about 1/2 inch. It's sturdier and more durable.

    Feeding During Colorado Winter

Quote: Great ideas, thank you! I've made a note of it in my chicken folder. Two questions. Do you get un-shelled BOSS or can they get the shell off (that being part of the food activity)? I see you have seven birds. How big is your coop? It sounds like you have lots of space.

Out of my twelve chicks, four were roosters. I feel your pain. We found someone who wanted them on Craigslist fairly easily. I replaced them with similarly aged layers a friend wanted to get rid of so it worked out. --Vivienne

Quote: I got these posts from another thread I started. I found them to be very helpful -- Vivienne -------------------- I live in the Pacific NW, and it gets cold here at times. We have had many times where it has been 5-9 degrees at night and 10 as a high daytime., and my girls are in an...

What is the difference between "ventilated" versus "drafty"?

Quote: ------------- My coop is much smaller so the birds roost just above the level of the pop door. Do you think this is a problem?

What is the difference between "ventilated" versus "drafty"?

Their exit door is around roost level (a bit below) so it seems that a cat door or a flap of some sort would be necessary for the winter to keep wind from blowing on them. There is an exhaust penetration with fan well above their roosting height. We've got it on a thermostat, believing that it...

    Feeding During Colorado Winter

So even when it is freezing out, keep their little door open so they can go out to feed and drink? I will have a warmer to keep the water from freezing. I realize they wear down coats but I just don't want to make a mistake that could cost their lives. Thanks, Vivienne

What is the difference between "ventilated" versus "drafty"?

I've been reading about the deep litter method and am game to try it. The coop I purchased has a big door for me to get in, which I can dam up with a board for the deep litter. However, the little door for the hens to go out is small and flush with the floor. It will quickly get buried or the...

I live in Boulder, CO and have a young flock of Easter Eggers, Silkies, a Buff Orpington, Australorp and Brahma. This is my first post.
