    Help with bantam id

So pretty! Unfortunately, they are already bit skittish. I was keeping them with Momma, in the garden, but I have been working on so may other projects since they have been here, I haven't spent that much time with them. Waffles (Momma), who is normally very friendly, was also very skittish...

    Help with bantam id

I hope so also. I have no other roo's in the backyard flock now, so there are no others to contend with, at least. If these two get along and don't get too mouthy or aggressive, they can both stay and have the cushy life of a spoiled backyard chicken. We'll see. I have never had bantams...

    Help with bantam id

Wow, you are good! I have never even heard of that breed. I just looked it up, and I think you hit the nail on the head! They do have that tall stature of a game bird. Thanks!

    Help with bantam id

I got these 3 bantams when they were around a week old, I am guessing by the feathering. At the time, I did not care what kind of chickens they were because I just needed some emergency babies and was just so thrilled to find them I didn't even ask. I had a broody hen who only had 1 egg hatch...

Can't afford hardware cloth!! What do we do?

Have you checked out your local freecycle site? I received enough materials from 1 post to put together 2 coops and 1 hutch. It's a great site to not only receive, but to list & get rid of things you don't want anymore without having to load the up and drop them at donation. If you haven't...

    Fodder for Broilers

Also wondering if you tried this. I wanted to try this spring. It's going to be an experiment on how much fodder, how little grain, since feed cost is the main expense of raising broilers. Also, what breed did you do? I'm hoping I'll be successful since I'm leaning towards a heavy breed...

6 week old Peking duck can't walk properly

Did you ever figure out what the issue was? I have a Peking with what sounds like the same thing. One leg is fine, the other seems paler, a bit smaller and is just about useless to her. I have been supplementing niacin from the get-go & calcium for a while (over a month) with no significant...

need some tips on removing a zip tie.

If you look at the square part of a zip tie, there is a little tab in there that catches the ribs on the strap. You should be able to insert a small flat head screw driver in there between the tab and strap which will allow it to slide freely.

    Pekin Duck Club!

Hi all! I've been around or owned chickens my entire life, but ducks are new to me. I finally took the plunge and got 5 Pekings, who turned 2 months old today. Boy, they grew fast!!! We are enjoying them so much! What personalities! I have a few questions about them if someone wouldn't...

GRAPHIC PHOTO: Dark comb, lethargic, died within 2 days, full of liquid

Thanks, sorry about your chicken also. I really think it's the fluid build-up pushing against her organs creating loss of blood flow, hence the dark comb, that caused sudden her death. I feel awful that I didn't realize what was wrong and hope she wasn't in too much pain. I am relieved...

A garden question, but not for garden section

You can get corn to grow in a bucket just fine, but in order for it to pollinate and produce, you need at least a 10' x 10' area of it.

Katharine, is she an indoor chicken? How long has she been like that?

GRAPHIC PHOTO: Dark comb, lethargic, died within 2 days, full of liquid

I don't think Ascites is the culprit here. She showed no signs of respiratory problems at all, and she was well past the developing stage. But I will put that on the list of things to research further until I find out what happened, thanks.

GRAPHIC PHOTO: Dark comb, lethargic, died within 2 days, full of liquid

Not really. It came on really quick and she was gone. I'm hoping someone can tell me if there was just something wrong with her that caused her internal leaking, or if this is something that I need to worry about my other girls. So, this is happening to you also? The liquid collecting...

GRAPHIC PHOTO: Dark comb, lethargic, died within 2 days, full of liquid

The hen was approximately 3 years old. Really stinks to loose her, she is one of my favorites and at the top of the pecking order. Friday evening, I noticed she was ick, loss of appetite and hanging out under the porch, which is all the girls favorite chill out spot, but she didn't want to...

    no eggs ever!

Why don't you give them at least until you've got the new chicks ready to take their place. You are not that far from eggs, I'm sure. Also, with young pullets you probably won't have much of an issue with the introductions. The only time I've had issues is when introducing older hens to...

First egg from my 57 WEEK marans!!

Wow! I just posted about our late layer who, until you posted about Nutella, was the only chicken I'd ever heard of taking over a year to start! I have two marans, a blue and a black, who both started laying within a week of each other right around 6 months. Their eggs are not what I...
