Hi all! I've been around or owned chickens my entire life, but ducks are new to me. I finally took the plunge and got 5 Pekings, who turned 2 months old today. Boy, they grew fast!!! We are enjoying them so much! What personalities!
I have a few questions about them if someone wouldn't mind answering. We didn't have them sexed, so we're still trying to figure out who is what, but there seems to be a leader to the pack and we think it's a female. Is that common? Do females usually lead, or is it a toss up? We think we have heard a few quacks, and (s)he is the smallest, but always leading the flock. When (s)he decides it's time to go to a new spot, everybody else gets up and follows!
Can you ever tell early in the growth of that tail feather on males? It looks like we have a few butts with a middle feather that is not in line with all the others but I know it's still early for that.
Also, what are they trying to communicate when they make the feathers on top of their heads stick up? I have seen them do this out in the yard when they are by themselves, and also when we are near them. Are they upset, is it a warning, or is it something else?
Thanks. We really love these ducks, even my husband, who only tolerates the chickens because he loves me! They are so expressive and funny! Well on their way to being as spoiled as the chickens. They already start nibbling on my feet or legs if they think their dinner is late!
