Pekin Duck Club!

I finally weighed the ducks. waddles still looks alot smaller but they are almost the same weight. Waddles is 4.8lbs @ 7 1/2 weeks and sally is 5.2 I think she may just be a little older maybe 8 weeks instead of 7 1/2. Would it really make that much difference in size for just a few days?

At one point Aflac put on 2.5 pounds in a week, so i think it could.

Hi all! I've been around or owned chickens my entire life, but ducks are new to me. I finally took the plunge and got 5 Pekings, who turned 2 months old today. Boy, they grew fast!!! We are enjoying them so much! What personalities!

I have a few questions about them if someone wouldn't mind answering. We didn't have them sexed, so we're still trying to figure out who is what, but there seems to be a leader to the pack and we think it's a female. Is that common? Do females usually lead, or is it a toss up? We think we have heard a few quacks, and (s)he is the smallest, but always leading the flock. When (s)he decides it's time to go to a new spot, everybody else gets up and follows!

Can you ever tell early in the growth of that tail feather on males? It looks like we have a few butts with a middle feather that is not in line with all the others but I know it's still early for that.

Also, what are they trying to communicate when they make the feathers on top of their heads stick up? I have seen them do this out in the yard when they are by themselves, and also when we are near them. Are they upset, is it a warning, or is it something else?

Thanks. We really love these ducks, even my husband, who only tolerates the chickens because he loves me! They are so expressive and funny! Well on their way to being as spoiled as the chickens. They already start nibbling on my feet or legs if they think their dinner is late!

chickery-do, here is a website that tells you how to make apple cider vinegar, along with the "mother". http://thehealthyeatingsite.com/apple-cider-vinegar-recipe/
Thank you for the info. on how to make the mother. I appreciate all the work everyone has gone through to getting me started but I still need even more info!

I've been to the web site an I still can't find a way to make the fermented feed. I guess I'm dumb. What supplies do you need.. What food supplies do you need. A start to finished site or list would be great. So much info . I really don't want to make the ACV,. I would rather buy it than wait a month or 6 months for it! At this moment I have Purina Chicken sratch, duMor Chick/starter grower and DuMor Poultry Layer for my big girls. And Home-fresh Duck food pellets. I have a large pail to ferment something in it. A large stirring spoon, cheesecloth. Is there anything else I should buy before I get the fermented ACV and mix it w/ my DuMor Chic/duck feed?
Can anyone help?

I think she's probably fine but a video would be helpful. It sounds a lot like my Jumbo girl and she eventually kind of "grew out" of it. I'd be more concerned if she was showing any other symptoms.
When you post your video, also post all the information about the brooder, feed, etc.

What are they in?
What are you using for bedding?
What kind of feed?
Anything added to their water?
Niacin?
Treats?
....and anything else you can think of. It helps people to properly diagnose any potential problems. I'm off to bed but will check in with you tomorrow!

Where do you get niacin? I don't have a tsc around here. Probably getting two pekins when school lets out. Have to finish convincing my mom and dad.

If you got them from the same location, they are likely the same age. They have pecking order, even with just two... so perhaps Sally is getting the lions' share of the feed?

Unfortunately, unless you know someone who has ACV with the mother, you won't get the fermenting ingredients from ACV bought at the store. It's been filtered and cleaned up.
