Pekin Duck Club!

Well after a night of separation I attempted to put them back together. Everyone seemed happy honking and making noise and immediately the Rouen started ripping out chest down from both of them, predominately the male though. Separated them again. He certainly doesn't seem to mind the Blu-Kote.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi All

Me again. At what age do Pekins start laying eggs?

Mine are 8 weeks now and have no interest in the nesting boxes. All they want to do is lounge by the pool all day

, but they do come in at night. Do they need a special set-up? This is assuming they aren't drakes. I have no idea. P.S. Shouldn't they be turning white, not yellow? No biggie, they're still awfully cute.

One of my Pekins started laying at 24 weeks, the other at 25. I think the earliest possible is about 18 weeks but most people find that it's later...

I just have a doghouse-type shelter for mine. One of my ducks actually lays inside there, another lays in the middle of the run anywhere she pleases, and the other built her own nest in a corner that is about 6 inches dug into the ground with straw covering her eggs. Silly ducks... they don't need nesting boxes like chickens though, if that's what you're asking.

Thanks

There is a dog house I could put in the run, the dog doesn't seem to know what it's for... If they go 'till 24 weeks they should start laying about the same time the baby chicks do. Eggs everywhere

My duckies got to experience our creek waterhole for the first time I wish I would have gotten some pics, I will get some next time I take them there. There is a little waterfall that dumps into a 4 foot deep hole with a nice bank that they can crawl onto. They loved it. I had a rough time catching Waddles when it was time for bed lol. I had to go in the water after him, I tell ya, its not easy to catch a swimming duck. It was rather comical from the banks of the creek im sure. They also unfortunately had their first sighting of our resident hawk/eagle... I only had a bucket to defend them with but if he would have come out of the air he woulda gotten the bucket! It was really big for a hawk but didnt drop low enough to see. May have been a golden eagle. The duckies knew to hide tho there is a nice little overhang they can hide under when they are there.

Random question. Has anyone ever heard a call that sounds like an wailing infant. I heard it during the daytime so i am almost sure it wasnt a nocturnal mamal. I think it was a bird. It sounded like it was coming from the trees behind the coop. (we are almost done building it!)

I think I am going to get some peas to try and convince them to just follow me up the bank...

This is my little guy Henry, he's about a month and a half old right now. He's my first duck I've ever owned lol. The picture shows him the first day I got him(a little over 3weeks ago) and a picture of him a few days ago!

Yes, if you want your ducks to practically attack you, have some peas! LOL - although I would limit the amount of canned peas as there's not really good nutrition in them and too much salt. Try frozen, thawed peas. You should video your cute ducks chasing the peas and share with us!

I actually buy the "No Salt Added" variety, for myself. I don't even add salt to my food, unless it calls for it in recipes (chemical reactions). However, until I can get to the store and buy bags of frozen peas (preferred) or grow my own fresh, that was what was available.

Sounds like a peacock that you heard.

You are way better than me - I am a salt-aholic myself. LOL
