    Eggplucker's Page

HER PRESENT It started in early August this year, when I asked, "What do you want for your birthday, honey?" She didn't answer immediately. It took several hours and deep comtemplation before she landed on her most pressing need: "Chickens." "Say what?" I asked, a little bewildered. I...

building a run; do I need to put wire down into the ground and if so..

Both racoons and rats can dig under your fence, so I recommend burying the fence wire not only below the fence line, but outward a foot or so as well. I just finished my run a few days ago, and on my home page there are pictures of how I did mine, if that will help you. eggplucker

    Sick rooster? HELP!

Our rooster, Frankie, abouit 4 1/2 weeks old, isn't looking so good. He's not eating much and his activity level has dropped to near zero. He sleeps all the time, even when holding him. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I might do? I think he's dying, and there may be nothing I can...

    Roost poop catcher

I am in the final stages of designing my first coop (8 X 4 for 7 chickens) and have come up with an idea that should help not only in cleaning the poop, but keep the coop cleaner, longer. I will install two 2X4 roosts across the width of the coop. Beneath each roost I will install a removable...

    Can chicks dehydrate and die?

Thanks everyone for the replies. I have purchased a small brooder that gives the chicks a place to cool down. I live in SW WA and it gets cooler than 60 every night. The birds are 4 weeks old now and, when I replace the ones I lost, I'll have 7. Hopefully I'm on the right track now and won't...

    Can chicks dehydrate and die?

I'm new to raising chicks, and I just lost two of my girls after 2 weeks. We've been keeping the temperature between 80 and 85, but in the box we're using there's no place for them to get away from the light and into some shade. Have I made a critical error that cost me two chickens? Could...

    Ensuring the right temperature

I'm a new chicken owner (just got six 2-week old chicks) and am just about to start building my first coop, so forgive my ignorance. I live in SW Washington, near Vancouver. I have seen temperatures as low as +15 in the winter, but that is rare. +25 is more typical for the coldest winter day...
