One of my black Spanish turkey hen is getting some moderate scratches on a bald patch under her wing. I noticed her "crying" as the tom was mating her, which was unusual. I had a close look at her and found the wounds. I have only a trio of turkeys and do not want to separate the tom so does...
It's courtship behavior. If you'll have another look at my comment, I state that I know what the behavior means. I was simply sharing a funny story being that my hubby thought my tom was having a seizure the first time he saw him doing his stomp dance.
Hubby saw our 4.5 month old black Spanish tom doing this the other day (I had previously seen him do it several times before because I spend more time with the birds) and he thought he was having a seizure! I knew better because I read up on turkeys before getting them.
Here are my 13 week old black Spanish females (ordered from Purely Poultry but shipped from Cackle Hatchery).
The female is front right. See the markings on her breast feathers & the gray/blue wing feathers? There is another female behind her with gray feathers. They also have lots of markings...
One of my 13 week old black Spanish (ordered from Purely Poultry but shipped from Cackle Hatchery) with a bronze tail feather & faint lines in his flight feathers! What the heck?? If you're a professional company & say you're selling a certain breed, why sell mixes???
Anyhow, my 2 males aren't...
Since I posted that, I bought 5 black Spanish poults through Purely Poultry but they shipped from Cackle Hatchery (Purely Poultry doesn't raise their own birds? What's their point, then?). They are now 13 weeks old. Most of them have feathers here & there with patterning or light colored. Guess...
I am considering keeping her (lets think positive, not rationally LOL) even if she turns out to be a boy. Time will tell.
So if she turns out to be a roo, if I breed him back to any hen (not just naked neck hens), he'll make naked neck babies?
I had a chick hatch this morning from a crested cream legbar hen mated by a turken (naked neck)/easter egger mix roo. What can you tell me about this chick? Would it be auto-sexing? I hope not because it doesn't have dark chipmunk stripes down its back, which would mean male!
I ordered a bottle of Tylan 50 from Jeffers for my poultry first aid kit. It arrived yesterday and I noticed its expiration date is 01/2016 which is...less than a year! Does Tylan just have a short shelf life or should I email Jeffers and ask for a different bottle?
This is very helpful. Thanks. I just ordered Tylan because one of my ISA brown pullets started making a gurgling sound at times when she breathes deep, especially on exhaling.
Wish I had time to read the comments on all 73 pages of this thread. That being said, does anyone have photo comparisons of heritage turkeys from SOP breeders compared to hatchery turkeys? I ordered 5 black poults from Purely Poultry but they shipped out of Lebanon, MO so I'm assuming they're...
I have two dark Brahma hens in my flock (one is pictured above in the original post). I got them from a local breeder who breeds for proper type. I don't show my birds, they're just pets who make us breakfast but there is nothing more lovely than a correct Brahma hen so I wanted to get mine from...
This website will tell you about caring for baby starlings. I believe they're illegal to release since they're non-natives. http://www.starlingtalk.com/index.htm
I bet he just needs more practice (poor hens)! My wyandotte roo (currently my only roo) was sooooo awkward until nearly a year old. Now each egg I incubate is fertile!
