incubator ideas! post your ideas for home made incubators, whether they work or not~

I am on my phone so the pictures will have to wait, but I am using a 30l cooler from a seecond hand store, a 60w light bulb a 90mm computer fan, and a PID temperature controller. I spent about 30 dollars on the temperature controller and it holds within .5 degrees. I have had an 80% hatch rate...

    Can chickens eat beef?

After we eat a roasted chicken and cook down the bones for stock, the carcass and whats left go to the chicken. They love it. I also will give them any left over meat that no one finishes. I once put a hip bone from a roast with marrow still in it. You can only imagine the chaos than followed to...

This is How They Fed Chicks 100 Years Ago

I do have to slightly disagree with this statement. While most modern birds are not bread to live on free range alone, they can be trained to do so. I know my sex links do just fine on a 80-90% free range diet. With laying levels exactly where they should be (5-6 eggs a week. ) Great thread by...

    How much feed a day?

I currently have 11 layers, 8- 4 to 12 week chicks, and 10 - week old chicks. I am going through probably 5-7 lbs of food a week(dry whole wheat, ground wheat, oats, flax, sunflower, pumpkin) and any table scraps that would normally go in a compost pile. Given it is currently still winter and...

    Heritage Feeds for Heritage Breeds

Quote: From my internet research, indian or heirloom corn varieties have much, much more nutrition than GMO or hybrid varieties most grown today. Especially those of darker colors. Protein included. Most modern corn has been bread to be extremely sweet, which increases sugar levels(carbs).

    Heritage Feeds for Heritage Breeds

I will keep you posted. I have been doing quite a bit of research on heated beds which may increase production rates. Using cheap PID controllers and cheap heating mats for seedlings.

    Heritage Feeds for Heritage Breeds

I forgot to mention, I also am expirementing with red wriggler worms. There is a guy locally who sells them by the lb. He claims if you get a good container going they can double in a months time. I have 2lbs going right now, have been for about 2 months. They have almost out grown the...

    Heritage Feeds for Heritage Breeds

Quote: If they are getting free range all day, I would think their mineral uptake would be taken care of. Now of course this is going to vary with the area you're in. But with free access to scratch, dig, and eat all the dirt and good bugs they can find tt shouldn't be a problem. Our soil here...

    Brinsea Ecoglow tear down

I was wondering if anyone as ever removed the outer shell of the ecoglow to see what type of heating element is in there? I know it is probably a long shot, seeing as most people do not take working products apart. But I thought I would ask anyways.

    Hello from Northern Utah

Hi everyone, I live at the base of the wasatch front in utah. I currently am bringing an old farm back to life, and chickens are part of that equation. There are currently 12 pullets/hens(2 out of the 12 are laying right now) which are all sex links. 5 of one, 4 of another, 3 of another. (we...

    What am I?

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't even look into the wyandotte, but looking at the breeds page it makes sense. He is very mellow, never gets aggressive. I will have to do some searching to see if anyone has used SL Wyandotte with sexlinks and what comes out. THanks again.
