Today I came out to find the two females sitting on their eggs and one egg in the middle of the pen cracked open again. This time inside was some blood and the beginnings of a baby (big eye and beak) One of my neighbors said they are just weeding out eggs they may feel are inferior or not on the...
I have two ducks that have gone broody, I know its 28 days of incubation but do I start counting days from the time they began sitting full time or from the time they started laying and building up their nest?
The ducks are in a night enclosure so they are safe from most predators..we don't have raccoons in our area.
The hen with the feathers missing is a magpie..The other is a saxony..
I have two hens and a drake. Both the hens have gone to sitting on about 10 eggs each. They were sneaky about it so I think they are about 3 weeks in. My question(s) are regarding some odd behavior I have seen, I haven't had ducks very long so I am new to this behavior.
Question 1..One of the...
Can anyone tell me what mites look like? I went in my coop today and there were alot of these little black gnatty looking things flying around. I cleaned out the coop completely. I checked all my ladies and none had any on them but it kind of scared me because I have had some birds have trouble...
I have had some odd issues with molting as well and maybe someone could here could help and advise me on it. I have Black Austerlops and they went through a heavy molt in August which is just about a year old for them. Most of them have re-feathered or at least mostly feathered back out again. I...
Thanks for all the advise. I hung curtains in the coop to darken it up in there and hung fabric over half of each of the boxes and threw in a couple of golf balls. They are still laying all over the place (boxes, floor, even in the pen) but they aren't eating them any more.
Thanks for all the advice....
I was off today so i checked them every 30 minutes. Out of 9 eggs, they ate two this morning before I let them out for the day, and they only ate one other, and that one was all over the top of the nesting boxes, so I think she may have tried to lay up there and...
The last few mornings I've come out my chickens were eating their own eggs, I tried to push them off but they were going at them like they were the best thing ever. They have never done that before and I am afraid they may get a taste for it and not stop. I am out there first thing in the...

I agree, most discussion boards treat people poorly when they ask questions, especially us noob chicken raisers, without the help and support of this board I would be a lot more worried and less confident as I embark on my chicken experience.
I wondered about this too, I have my chicks indoors in their brooder with a infared light. We are in arizona and at night it is still warm and will be most winter. After a few weeks when there brooder should be in the 80s could they go without heat if its 80-85 degrees inside?
I have several week old black australorp chicks. They are all growing like weeds but I have one that has been burying herself in the pine shavings. They have plenty of room and food and water. The brooder is kept at 92 degrees and all of the rest seem to be normal but this one worries me because...
I ordered my chicks and received them on the next Friday, they called and gave me eta and confirmation. I found them very easy to work with and all my chicks came healthy and happy.
I have also been quite worried about this. Its been 110+ here in arizona and I actually called the hatchery and pushed the date another month. I know people raise chickens here all the time but I am afraid of losing my first group because of the heat. I am already overprotective I hate to see...
