    The Connemara Sic N

Sicíní is the word for "chickens" in the Irish language. We live in the Connemara region of County Galway, Ireland. We keep four lovely hens on our property that sits right on the wildly wet & windy Atlantic Ocean. As of this writing, we're new chicken keepers, having started in January of...

    "Must-Haves" for the Beginner

Thanks a million for all the suggestions so far, guys. Keep them coming! Wondering how our hens are going to like the brutal Connemara winds. Gusts up to 140 km/h (87 mph) overnight tonight. Just another day in the west of Ireland.

    "Must-Haves" for the Beginner

Quote: We get at least SOME rain on perhaps 300 days of the year in the west of Ireland. Maybe more. We burn a LOT of turf (from the bogs, not grass), so we can save some of the ash and use that to spread under the floor of the house to help keep it dry. What is this "dry weather" of which...

    Too Much Wind?

We live in Connemara in the west of Ireland. Our property backs looks out onto the Atlantic Ocean, and we regularly have intense wind. It isn't unusual to have gusts up to 130 km/h (85 mph). As we're new to the idea of chickens (don't have any yet), I was wondering if it may be too windy here...

How Many Hens in this Ark?

It's strange...I've looked at probably 50 or more coops on the internet in Ireland (some of them from very reputable and highly-recommended companies), and almost none of them have windows.

How Many Hens in this Ark?

Quote: They're new, not used. Good information and suggestions, though. I knew ventilation was crucial, but I did not realize a window was a must. I'll keep looking...

How Many Hens in this Ark?

Quote: Well again, as far as them getting light, they'll be free-ranging at least part of the time, and additionally a run will be provided no matter which coop we buy. They'll only have to spend as much time in the coop as they wish.

How Many Hens in this Ark?

The coops this guy is selling are a lot more "bang for the buck," but the ventilation allowances worry me a bit. Am I right, or does it look sufficient? Look at the two holes up near the top of the front of the coop...there are two matching holes at the back. Would that be enough...

How Many Hens in this Ark?

Well, the floor space of the actual coop is far less, because those measurements include the run. I'd say the coop is only 4x4 (or thereabouts), so it sounds like four hens would be the most we'd want to put in there.

How Many Hens in this Ark?

Looking at an ark that measures 8x5x5. I know that's sufficient for at least four hens, but would it be reasonable to have up to six in there given the fact that they'll be free-ranging at least part of the day on most days?
