Show your coop... Then and Now

Time for another update. My coop has finally reached a point of decay requiring replacement so I thought I'd summarize it's history: July 2008 - Originally completed. January 2011 - In the Pacific Northwest, it rains more often than not so moisture was the enemy. However, we do...

What recipes do you like that use a lot of eggs???

Are you using an aluminum pan? Sulfur in eggs tends to react with bare aluminum and turn green.

    300-Minute Eggs

Had a little fun with some eggs today. Tried the '300-minute' recipe, put on the rack in oven set to 210 degrees for 5 hours and below are photos of the results. From the oven I put them into a bowl of cool water and then peeled them a few minutes later (very easy to peel). The air pocket is...

    Slaughtered my first roo!

We also dispatched a roo this past Spring. He was about 8 months old but had a very nasty disposition. We made Coq au Vin following this recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/coq-au-vin-recipe/index.html It was a bit of work, but he was absolutely delicious!

Show your coop... Then and Now

    Coop tractor wheels

I've used a simple 2X4 with two lawnmower wheels attached. I have small handles installed on each end of my coop and I just lift the heavy end, kick the board with wheels underneath, and then use the handles on the other side to "drive" it to its next location. Then, lift the heavy end and...

    plexi glass windows for winter

Here is what I did for my coop window, u-shaped frame on the coop that the window slides in and out of, plus a piece glued to the window as a handle. Since taking this photo, I've painted a white line connecting the right top and bottom of the frame so that from a distance it looks like a...

Just went out and one of my girls is dead.....

I sorry about the loss of your hen. Sometimes things 'just happen' and it might have had nothing to do with her leg or the leg band so I don't think it's necessary for you to do anything about the coop. Others might have different advice.

    Soft-Shell / Shell-less Egg Video

This egg was laid a couple of days ago, I've got one hen who does this pretty frequently: In the video I mention that this egg is 'edible' however I need to mention that an egg like this is VERY POROUS and moisture, bacteria, nano-robots, etc. can easily get into the egg and make you sick...
