can I use sand for a dust bath? If so, what kind? Or what would you suggest?

I use fine PlaySand, the same as what I get for my children in their sandbox. They (the chickens!) seem to like it.

Mine go nuts over pete moss with a little Diatomaceous Earth mixed in.
If I don't have any DE the neighbor usually has wood ash (NOT bar-b-que ash) that I can have. I run it through the compost sifter to get any large chunks out before I put it in.

DE isn't a poison or anything, don't sprinkle it where the honey bees frequent and it wont harm them.
