    Hen's last egg

Julie, I thought your article was wonderful! I have saved it to show to my kids...they will each get a copy on their pillows when they turn in for the night. Thanks for that! Sandy

    Nest box snaffu......

No, I don't think that you ruined anything at all....maybe keep them closed up in the coop for a few days to make sure that they start using the nest boxes again. It worked for me in 2 days, no problem. Good luck!

any place to buy sexed silkies?

I have to agree with MPC...i ordered 2 female silkie chicks, white and buff, and they threw in an extra blue silkie chick as a packing peanut. Thus far, all signs are pointing in the right directions as far as accuracy goes. And that little blue silkie cockerel is the most beautiful of them...

    Plants/vine to shade run ?

My vote on this would have to be climbing hydrangea. That is what I am planning on planting on the west side of my run...it can develop into quite a beast, though you can cut it back if necessary. Whitish-green flowers in the summertime. Hardy up here in the north...

What are the signs that she is close? UPDATED WITH PIC

For me, the sure-fire sign that eggs were on the way was when the girls started doing the "egg squat" when you approached them. If you've never seen it before, you'll recognize it when you go to pick up you hen and she sort of freezes in a squatted "hunkered-down" position with her wings...

    ALMOST integrated......but not quite......

I haven't done the integration thing yet, but I read on here that someone put up a piece of plywood propped up against the coop wall (kinda teepee style) so the little ones can get behind it but not the big ones. Someone else mentioned a cardboard box with a hole cut in big enough for the...

    ALMOST integrated......but not quite......

Here's the scoop: I have a flock of mixed age. 7 girls are 22 weeks of age (all standards), and 5 girls are 14 weeks of age, (3 silkies, a standard polish and an australorp). They free range together in the evenings under my direct supervision, and they even roost together. The two groups...

Definitely could make this into a coop!

OMG, too funny tiffanyh! I bet he'd cut you a deal of some sort...see what he says...... I go through Durham all the time on my way to Wallingford. I bet i've passed by your house a thousand times! Get ready - the fair is coming sooooooooooon!!!!!!

Definitely could make this into a coop!

No kidding! And they're not that small...5 x 7 x 7.5 feet! I wanted one for my silkies and for storage, but seeing as the trim isn't even finished on my big coop, i have no hopes for another one.... I was hoping someone around here could use them, though.

Definitely could make this into a coop!

I found these on Craigs List and nearly bought one just to keep around in case I needed it! Hubby said no (that's okay), but I had to pass on the info in hopes that maybe someone else could use one. Just imagine...little pop door, a few windows, roof adjustment... PERFECT! He has a bunch of...

Do anybody else's hens take Sundays off? Lol :)

I had to laugh when I saw your post...my buff orp started laying last Saturday. She took Sunday off. Every day since then I have been gifted an egg from her. Yes, even today, Sunday. I though for sure she would consider it a day of rest, but nope!

    First egg! Now....who did it???

I have just answered my own question... It just started to downpour, so i ran outside to put the 11-week-olds into the coop, and i caught her in the act! It is the buff orpington, Snowflake, who has been doing the egg squat for the last 2 weeks! I would have though that it would be the one...

How many chickens for a 10 by 8 coop?

At 8 x 15 for the run, that would be 120 square feet in total. If you have 10 square feet per bird, 12 chickens should be your max, I figure. More than adequate for the 9 birds that you have and also adding a few more. However, adding a few more square feet to the run would also allow you...

    First egg! Now....who did it???

We're so eggcited! Found our first egg yesterday - a small light tan egg! As soon as i get the battery charged on my camera, i will post pictures under the First Egg thread. I have my suspicions on who is the hen responsible, but i want your opinions, please. I think it is one of my 2...

    Screaming Polish Chickens?

My Polish chick does the same thing when picked up. She would much rather perch on your arm than be held with your hands, and is perfectly content to be transported anywhere you please as long as she is just sitting on your arm or hand. But don't try to pick her up - thrashes and hollers!!

    cedar mulch outside the run?

Thank you much! My 14-year-old son was actually the one who noticed that i got cedar. He says "mom, i don't know about this. YOu better check on backyardchickens before you use it, don't you think?" LOL Gotta love that kid.
