Hello all,
I am exited to inform y'all that my silkie pullet ( 8 months) has gone broody over a clutch of eggs!! I know that it is quite late, bu our winters over here in California are not too harsh. Will keep you updated!
Hello all,
I have come to the realization that the majority of my chickens are closing in on the big 4. I am thinking of butchering a few for a few reasons: A. They don't lay nearly as much as when they were younger B. I want to continue with the idea of " knowing and appreciating where your...
Roo! I have two silkie boys, one of which is identical to yours. Take a look at his tail, the feathers have volume and begin to curl at the ends, the true sign of a roosters tail.
Good advice!!! I will wait another couple of weeks to see how it goes..... I hesitated to split them because they snuggle together in one heap of fluff on the floor of my coop every night... haha :)
Hello all,
Within the past 4 months I have begun to mix younger chickens into my flock in hopes of receiving fresh eggs more often. As it just so happens, 2 of my 3 Silkie Bantams are male. I have a flock of 15 birds. That leaves approx 13 females to the boys. However, I am wondering if that...
I strongly recommend 2 Pygmy Goats. I used to have a set of twin females named Poppy and Petunia. Although we gave them away top a petting zoo, ( we made the best choice possible, as I began to work many hours, and I felt that thy were being deprived), They were excellent at clearing away...
Hello all,
I believe that I made a grave error this morning. My chicks are on day 21, no pip, no zip. I began to panic and decided to assist one, for fear of its life. I took off the back part of the egg, the air sac area. Again, no pip. There was blood, so I stopped, wrapped it in a damp...
Hello,
I have 4 Bantam BR's due to start pipping tomorrow. I have the main section of the water tray filled, but not the others. How, when or where should the extra water go for humidity???

This is a sticky situation. However, I imagine that the hatchery wants to make sure the babies make it. I would look at our postal system...... many things are being shipped later than normal. Cutbacks, and layoffs have sent the U.S. Postal Service into a world of hurt. I received an order of 15...
If you say you have wolves, and then coyotes, I am led to believe that it is a Wolf/ Coyote cross. I would steer clear of those creatures. They are mighty dangerous, with the determination of a coyote, and the brute strength of a wolf. Look up the article in National Geographic for input. It is...
Good input! I too have a bran owl box, but it is several hundred feet away from frequented places. I am sure the barn owl will find the box, and yes, make sure the hole is as small as an owl will fit. Look at the Hungrowlproject.org... These guys know what they are doing

Owls can hunt the day, when food is scarce or in high demand ( I.E. Owlets) but is rare indeed. Make sure that netting, and fencing is metal, and can withstand being ripped. I recommend hitting it a few times, just to make sure :)
Thank you all for sharing!! I might just need to sneak out tonight and catch a pic for this thread :)!! Maggie, you are very fortunate. Burrowing owls are an endangered species ( almost nil where I live.) Loving all the responses :))

Hello all,
I am wanting to let you all know that it is so important as we raise our hens, we respect the natural birds of prey living in the trees above our coops, no matter how intimidating they may look. I myself have a lovely pair of Barn Owls that live in my yard habitually, and are a true...
Hello all,
I have been waiting 5 days for my order of eggs to arrive in the mail. We are going on day six now, and I am worried. Can someone give me advise on how to handle this problem?
Ok, Just checked the bator, back up to 98. Let me make a list of bullet points so we are all in the same page:
- I have 3 thermometers in there, one is super fancy and ready 100% accurate. I rely on this the most.
- The bator is in our Mudroom ( which is adjacent to a door leading to the...
Hello all,
I have a dozen eggs due to arrive at my doorstep in the next 4 days. My Hova Bator has been at a steady 99- 100 range for the past few days, but now it is at 96, and I cannot figure out how to raise it accordingly. This is my second attempt at hatching eggs myself. I have the water...
