"m going to post this in all the heat-related threads just to be sure to get the message out.
I installed a mister in one of my runs yesterday. Today was the first time I have seen them NOT PANTING in well over a week. I was delighted, and I'm sure they were too.

We just started letting our little flock out a couple of weeks ago. We have had no problem with them returning on their own to the run (but our yard isn't 1-3 acres either); they go back in just before dusk. One day I let them out earlier in the afternoon, having forgotten that we were going to...
The best design feature of my coop has turned out to be the droppings board under the roost. I used some sort of coated fiber board--can't remember what it's called. It is GREAT. They pretty much only roost in the coop, so very little poop gets on the floor; I'd say all of what they poop out...

I agree, as I said earlier, but wanted to add my experience with aging. I've eaten quite a few older birds over the years, and even with aging about 5 days, an old bird is pretty tough. Better to crock pot them than to fry them and end up with rubber chicken.

Brining doesn't...
I know others have weighed in with the same advice I'm about to give, but I'll just sort of sum up what jumped out at me:
(1) The bird was too old.
(2) It could have been aged another couple of days, which would have helped.
(3) Brining might have helped, but it wouldn't get rid of the...
Another Austinite here, as you might have guessed from the name.
Our first chickens (13 meat birds) are supposed to be arriving from Ideal in three weeks.
Wish me luck, please!
I highly recommend peel and stick roll roofing; I've had terrrific luck with it. You might want to take steps to shore up the sagginess, of course.
Here's what I'm talking about--you can find it (or a similar product) at both Lowes and Home Depot:

And thank YOU. I'll probably go ahead with the original plan to have two roosts at the same height unless someone else weighs in to talk me out of it!
Sorry if this repeats anything from other threads.
(1) Nest boxes: At what height does one need to start thinking about providing a perch for the birds? We're leaning toward Orpingtons or other larger breeds, so I'm thinking of putting the boxes at about 12" rather than 18". Do you think they...
Greetings all!
I'm brand new to the forum and to chicken raising. I hope after I get some experience under my belt I can be a useful member rather than just a needy one. That experience will begin in about a month, after I get the coop and run built.
Enough babbling--I'll get to my question...
