Heat index 110 no breeze/my advice

Maybe you could build a pop-door in one of these, and replace the shelves with perches!

It's 109 out there right now. We put a frozen water bottle into our waterer, I have a fan on in the coop. I pray it is enough.

I lost a hen yesterday to heat prostration.

Last year it was hot but my chickens were young, now they are fully feathered and are having a hard time with this horrible heat.

I hope I don't loose anymore.

I know what you mean. This year is much worse on mine also, because they're grown. I find it's much worse on my larger breeds, like the BBS Orps. They're so big, and all those feathers. All we can do is try to keep them hydrated, and try to keep that darn water cool................

I'm going to post this in all the heat-related threads just to be sure to get the message out.

I installed a mister in one of my runs yesterday. Today was the first time I have seen them NOT PANTING in well over a week. I was delighted, and I'm sure they were too.

It might take them a bit to get used to it. They were leery of it and all the bravest one were hanging back in the coop or out in the other, less shady run. So today I spread a bunch of scratch in the run and waited for them all to be out in it and too jazzed about the scratch to care about anything, and I turned the mister on. That did the trick--they got used to it and then hung out there the rest of the afternoon.

All these other tricks help too, but again, get a mister!

I have a large, glass casserole dish that I fill with water every morning and set in a shady spot in their run. Throughout the day they'll wade through it to cool down. In conjunction with a big fan on the girls all day, and later directed across their roosting area, their panting and discomfort has been relieved.

It's been very hot/humid here and my little roo can't deal with the heat very well. I made a little wading pool for the run which I've seen him walk through. Last night he was panting on the roost.

I'm wondering if hanging a frozen water bottle where he sleeps would give him some relief? Would it be okay for him to sleep against it?
