Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Hello all, I tend to be a little transient on this website, but I've been catching up a little bit on what's happened in the few months I've been away. I've been trying to keep reactions to a minimum so as not to spam everyone.

I'm very saddened to read of the losses many experienced these last few months. I'm just a stranger on the internet, and I feel that these digital words are wholly inadequate to describe how I feel, but this thread and the peoples and animals on it are important to me. My heart goes out to all of you who've recently lost those dear to you.

I'm also quite excited to learn about recent developments, namely the potential for the field chickens to have a rooster again. :)

Sappy stuff aside, a lot of the research, information, and discussion here has been very helpful to me and my long term plans, which is a big part of why this thread is my favorite on BYC. Despite my extensive experience with chickens, I rarely feel I have much of substance to add here. However, I do feel like I've had some meaningful insights recently, which I can share whenever relevant :p

Thank you for "chiming in". I have learned so much on BYC, but especially here in Shadrach's thread when roosters are part of the discussion.

Glad you are back :hugs

Perris and I are in contact via PM. I have no idea what went wrong with the earlier attempt.
Perris has made an exceptionally kind offer and after this weekend we will attempt to sort out the details. I can't write much more about the arrangements without consulting Perris regarding how much detail I can post in this thread. What I can write is it looks like we are going ahead with getting one of the cockerels Perris has offered to the field.

This is all new territory for me. In the past the chickens have sorted out all this without my interference.

There won't be any quarantine period. While not impossible to arrange, under the field constraints it's not a realistic option. :fl Keeping new arrivals separate is just about doable, but ensuring the new arrival gets fed properly would mean a system much like what I'm currently using where I leave food in the coop overnight and an auto door that lets them out into the coop run a couple of hours after dawn. That would require a new coop with an auto pop door and a dust screen around the large wire enclosure you will have seen in the pictures I've posted. Anything less isn't really effective quarantine.
While I could arrange to be there in the mornings for a couple of days by staying at my eldest overnight, the four weeks recommended quarantine period isn't doable.
That's the reality of the situation.

Yeah, if you’re in a city with good food (of any ethnicity), why pay for Taco Bell?

Not to be that Greek, but I think Athens has relatively good food :p .

So far the only foreign chain that has really caught on here is McDonalds. We will see what the future holds for Taco Bell

Yes, one of my boys bringing in something that your girls have not hitherto been exposed to is a risk; obviously I wouldn't send anyone who I thought might be suffering or carrying something; but they're not always obvious and we just have to hope that anything such would be mild and not severe in its impact. And that whichever cockerel arrives will be able to step into the vacant shoes without causing a ruckus, and treat Mow and Sylph with the respect they deserve. And not give you any grief either. And if it doesn't work out, they will have to be culled. They face that prospect here of course.

Very exciting :celebrate ! Please update us as soon as both of you feel comfortable to, and all the details have been arranged. Will be fun to see which cockerel will have the opportunity to become king of the allotment

This is terribly exciting! I am sure that it is going to be beautiful to hear the sound of crowing again. If all goes well, you will be able to return to letting the chickens sort things out, which will make you much happier, I am sure!

There will likely be some ruckus, new young male arriving on the scene, with some young ladies who have been operating without a male, there will be an adjustment period.

I am sure, with Shad's expertise, he will demonstrate to the ladies, that this new, sweet boy, is supposed to be there.

I'm not overly worried about contagion. What I am worried about is Mow and Sylph making the poor chaps life a misery while he finds his feet. I might be lucky. They might just go "ohhhh yummy, it's a male" and roll over, or crouch, most likely with Sylph.:D
