My Buff Orpington started to lay at 20 weeks.
Barred Rock and Welsumer just started at 21 weeks.
Still have 2 Easter Eggers, 1 Black Cuckoo Maran and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte who are 22 weeks, but no eggs yet. My EE's show the least signs of laying and I've heard they can take up to 8 months!
Well, I left town for a week and my husband diligently cared for my girls. I was surprised at how much quieter they are than they were 2 weeks ago. Phew! 3 of 7 are laying, so hopefully we're almost through the peak noise.
We are first timers and 3 of our 7 hens are laying at 21 wks.
I know the light brown eggs pictured are from our BR and our BO, because I've seen them lay.
I suspect that the speckled eggs are from our Welsumer. Is this what they would look like?
Other hens yet to lay include: 2 EE's, 1 BCM and...
We started getting spotted eggs last week and have suspected they are probably from our Welsumer, but wondered if the other possibility was our Maran. We've only been getting eggs for 2 weeks total and 3 of our 7 are laying. The others are plain brown eggs from our BR and our BO. I was out of...
We got our first egg yesterday, although we have no idea from which hen! Probably our BO or BR...they are SO loud the past few days.
The egg was so tiny and the second egg today was a little bit bigger. Looking forward to many more from our 7 girls.
Mine are doing the same thing and I'm so worried the neighbors will complain! We have an empty lot on all 3 sides, but there are neighbors across the street and hens are 'technically' allowed!
My hens are 20 weeks and have gotten SO loud over the past week. We got our first egg from one of our girls yesterday, and I can't tell which one, because two of them are singing a LOT (my buff and my barred rock). When egg laying loses it's novelty, will they quiet down a bit? Or will they...
I got my first egg yesterday, too, and I had a similar reaction! I have 3 'decoy' eggs in my nest boxes. I did the usual count...1,2,3,...wait a minute...1,2,3....4! I closed the box lid fast! Then opened it again and said, 'Oh my! There's an egg in there!' It was pretty funny. It's a...
I was just researching this topic last week. In many countries, eggs are sold and stored at room temperature. Either is fine. However, once eggs are refrigerated they should remain refrigerated. This is because going from the fridge to room temp causes 'sweating' or condensation on the egg...
My girls are 11 weeks old. I haven't given them too many treats so far, but they have shown interest in raw oats and flax seeds.
Absolutely zero interest in lettuce. I think maybe they've never been hungry...spoiled birds. This is a great thread!
My Buff Orpington is 10 weeks and looks like she got pecked in the eye or the comb. Only one side of her face looks like this. Should I treat it with Blue Kote? How do I keep it from getting in her eye? She also has just a little bit of blood on her feet right at the claws. No pecking signs...
How old should chickens be before I feed them leafy greens and table scraps? Mine are 8 weeks old and so far I've only given them dried meal worms on a few occasions. I tossed a leaf of kale in the coop last week and they weren't too interested. Is this age related, or do they just not like kale?
The bottom of the chain is attached to an "S" type carabiner. I just lift the funnel and pull the water off of the caribiner. The bungee pops right off. Takes about 10 seconds to pull it down and probably 20 to put it back on and reattach the bungie. I'm so happy to not be changing out water...
This is the feeding system in my new coop. I attached a steel cable across the top and tightened it using a turn buckle (Lowes hardware). The feeders are attached with carabiners that slide back and forth for easy filling. As they get bigger/taller, I'll raise the feeders one chain link at a...
