Also interested in where you are. I can donate some colorful eggs, some purebreds and some not.

Hi, and welcome to the new folks! On the chicks and heat lamp, look to see how close they stay to it now. I'll be moving six-week-olds this weekend. They stay in a wide circle around the lamps to sleep now, not under them. So they'll be fine moving into a protected but unheated building...

Wow! Everyone has spring fever! Chick fever! Check with doubleatraining on surplus Wellies. I know she was looking for a roo. I sold most of my BBS English Orps to April (can't remember her handle here!) and greenchickenman. Either of them might be able to provide those. April is in...

Just wanted to ask what color eggs you are getting from your Barnevelders. I was considering them, but what I was reading was that the egg color has lightened, particularly in the US. Although I've already decided to stick to my Welsummers and just bring in new bloodlines, I'm still curious!

Cold. Ugh. We make sure to tarp all the "just wire" sections of the chicken houses before the first freeze, and cover the doors with clear plastic. The eaves only have bird netting, so provide ventilation without catching a breeze. I shut down the automatic waterers and replace with bowls...

Quiet it has been. I've had nothing much to say lately...so didn't. This is the last week of classes and next week is finals. I'm already exhausted and looking forward to the end of the semester. I'm going to start hatching the first of the year, if the chickens cooperate. Also going to...

Hey! We put blue tarps on the wire parts of all our chicken houses in the winter. It works. We like what works. We need the air flow in summer far more than we need good looks in winter!

Hubby got back from his trip to Okinawa yesterday. He was quite pleased with the new calves. We also discussed some serious downsizing of the poultry in favor of increasing other livestock. I'll turn one chicken house and associated pastures over to two pigs next spring. I'll also have to...

I finally got my calves for this year! Yay! Four handsome boys. I'm so pleased! The warm weather seems to have allowed time for my POL pullets to almost all start up laying. Even ones I wasn't expecting to start until spring seem to have started. Since most of my adults have slacked off...

Eat them, do a lot of baking to share, and have a waiting list for egg sales. We could easily sell our legal limit (30 doz/week) but we won't exceed that, because we don't want to grade the eggs. Our customers like the idiosyncrasies of the ungraded eggs. I do size them. I keep the smallest...

Hi All! I agree on the health of hen-raised chicks versus people-raised ones. If I could, I'd let hens raise all my chicks! On the fecal float, I'd call around to other vets. I have no idea why yours wouldn't do a float. If you have a microscope, you can make your own float solution. Not...

Layers for sure! And I definitely use hand warmers. I couldn't manage without them. But I still can't use my hands with gloves or mittens, as I also have neuropathy in my hands. It's ok, though. Once the quail are frozen and the extra rabbits and pheasants are gone, winter will be better. :)

I skin them. Much quicker. Hearts and livers get cooked up for dog treats. Packaging depends on if I leave them whole or separate breast and legs. I don't weigh them. Supposed to be two for a serving, but I will eat one and hubby will eat three, so if whole I pack four.

Woohoo! Fall break at last! And I get an extra day since I don't have classes on Wednesday anyway! Five whole days!! To clean my house. Welcome to the new folks! This is a good, helpful group here. Jump right in! I found myself having nightmares about the coming winter. I hate...

My son loved his 30th birthday present! He wasn't able to go to his sister's 30th, so didn't know what I did for her. It was nice to have it be a surprise! 30 x 30 day! 30 colorful bags with 30 items in each bag. 30 lollipops...because 30 sucks! 30 rocks...because (duh!) 30 Rocks! The...
