I bought some Buff Orpingtons & Leghorns at the same time. My Leghorns have been laying for about a month but my Buffs haven't laid anything yet. Anyone have this experience?
When my wife and I first got chickens we, like many others I'm sure, checked the coop several times a day as the time was near. I was out mowing grass and got an idea. Secretly I went into the house and took a store bought egg and placed it in one of the nesting boxes, then waited. It didn't...
Thanks all - the color of the egg doesn't matter much to me ( my DW was hoping for some white eggs) but I guess it is a lesson learned about where to buy chickens if you want a certain breed
Thanks again
I was told that b/c the chicks are hatched from incubators they lose the instinct to lay on the eggs. I have not had one broody hen since I started raising chickens about 5-6 years ago. They all came from hatcheries. Then a friend gave some banty Old English Game chickens. These are totally...

Mac is right, coming from a plumbing point of view, the higher the top of the water the more pressure you have. Even if you would only fill the bucket half full would reduce the amount of pressure . I have a friend who used a spring for a water supply for his house. There was a tank...
Was it Neil Grassbaugh? - if something is wrong I'm sure he can help. You can also try a small O ring at the base of the threads. I had trouble getting the threaded type to seal on a bucket and the O rings did the trick.
Mine quit crowing in the early fall. Didnt make sound for a bout 2 - 3 weeks. Then he sounded kind of raspy but is now back to normal. He seemed healthy in every other way. I wondered too "why" but i never got an answer.
My experience is that they prefer water out of a traditional watering system but they will use and do just fine with the water nipples. If you continue to give them another water source they will probably wait for it. I am curious to see what others have found.
I started using the nipples this past spring and they have worked well in plastic buckets. My plan for winter is to bring the buckets in at night and put them out again in the morning. If I put them in the coop during the day it will take a long while or a really cold day to freeze. The coop...
I have a 3 year old RIR rooster who just quit crowing. It has been about 3 or 4 days now. Can anyone tell my why a rooster would just stop crowing? He seems healthy other wise, takes care of his girls and seems nornal in every other way.
