    Chickens who HATE snow?

That's kind of funny-awful! Since you live in Minnestota. My favarolles really don't like snow and I ended up clearing an area for them, but the plymouth rocks and ameraucanas don't mind it. Of course, I'm in Virginia, so it's not too big an issue. (WAY too much snow this winter though; I can...

Favorolles and /or capuchine pigeons near Fredericksburg or Culpeper VA

I need a fav cockerel or two for this winter, and I have a daughter who has just discovered pigeons. Does anyone around Fredburg or Culpeper raise either or those? And does anyone know of a bird swap in August around here? I missed a lot of the summer due to health and I only have a couple...

I'm in Goldvein (down 17S past Opal), sometimes I meet customers in Warrenton that come down from your area. Also have a friend selling chicks in Amissville (out 211). We both have new hatches, blue and splash orpingtons and black Americanas and maybe some others but these are "straight run" so...

Wow. I would have had to stop. We've had bobcat around here (southern Fauquier) but coyotes are usually the biggest predators that we worry about. A pair of hawks raises a brood every year, so my layers can't go up into the open field. Foxes of course. Think the dogs discourage the possums and...

    Faverolles Thread

I keep a lot of rock varieties as well as Americanas and favs. I wouldn't call my favs "calm". They are not as rough as the other chickens (for instance, I can mix ages more easily w.o the older ones harassing the younger ones as badly as the other breeds do), their roosters are generally not as...

Are we talking Northern VA Stafford, as in Garrisonville? I'm about 20 minutes from there, look up Goldvein on the map to see about where I am. I still have 4 Barred Rock hens from the Dec. 1 hatch (who will be laying in May). Everything else is still young at this point. Month old barred rocks...

Young Chicks and 9.6% Corid liquid

I forgot to ask, would you also keep the medicated feed going, with a full dose in the water? Lee

Young Chicks and 9.6% Corid liquid

Ok, thanks! I was going to be selling these this weekend too. I may end up with a LOT of chickens this fall. We're originally from Ruston LA ourselves, Larry retired from the Army and so Northern VA had a job...but one of our daughters has been accepted to LA Tech and if she goes, I'm going to...

Favs can be older and get blended in, but they are so gentle that they don't do as well as the newcomers, in my experience. My problem right now is coccidia! If I could solve that I'd have plenty of favs!

Young Chicks and 9.6% Corid liquid

I have 3 week old chicks w/ cocci and I've never had to dose any so young. Does anyone know if I should use the full strength 5 day dose or maybe the lower 21 day dose? They are looking a lot worse in only 12 hours. All my older chickens have had cocci but these were in the garage in a brooder...

Hello, I'm raising Salmon Favs in Northern Virginia

Unfortunately the chicken guy I knew is retiring and has no more. And even worse, last year I sold the better rooster, I think. Well, part of the adventure. My sons used to do poultry showing but I'm not a competitor myself; I just like raising chickens.

Hello, I'm raising Salmon Favs in Northern Virginia

Hello from Virginia! This is the third year we've raised favs; my daughter showed them at last years county fair and even she (the non chicken person) decided she liked them. We only know a few of the desirable show characteristics. I know our rooster has too many blades to his comb. I have...

Sponsored Post Congratulations MamaNini! You won a beautiful coop from Handcrafted Coops!

I live in Northern Virginia and sell chicks and I was surprised when MamaNini showed up to buy chickens to put in her new coop. I had just signed on with BYC myself a few weeks back and so I knew of the contest. It was a real "what a small world" moment!

Good for you, raising chickens in the city! I even looked into having poultry on a military base (no way) but now we're retired and I'm back to having chickens. You have quite a variety there. I have tried Welsummers two years running but this year only have 2 chicks-I'd buy your extras if we...

Isn't anyone else on this list near Culpeper, Warrenton, or the north side of Fred'burg? I'm actually in Goldvein, along 17, right at the southern tip of Fauquier County. I am converting my laying flock into barred rocks this year (after a few years of experimentation with mixing chicken...

Postal cuts....will it affect baby chick shipments? Hatchery responds!

My local post office closed a couple years ago (I think the PO let the lease go as a cost saver but called it "lease disagreement"). So our next closest is 8 miles away, maybe, in Sumerduck. But somehow the chicks only make it to the Culpeper area office 25 miles away. I just spent $30 in gas...

I know the CFC (Culpeper Farmers Cooperative) had the option of ordering Khakis..they are in Warrenton/Culpeper. Did you also check Tractor Supply? Their Chick Days are this week, I think. I'm in Goldvein but I just sold my last two; there might be some more in a couple weeks (I don't hatch them...
