We lost a hen last week and now our backyard flock is down to one 3 year old hen. I want to do whatever is best for her, she's a sweety. We don't want to her get lonely.
I have no idea what to do next, so I'm brainstorming.
We were thinking of getting 4-5 female chicks and letting her raise...
This is so cute, we always thought we had the most spoiled chickens who ever lived. I'm delighted that ours are in such good company!
When I'm making grits or rice or pasta, I make extra for them, especially warm grits if it's cold out. In the summer they get a quarter of a watermelon from the...
5 bantam chicks, hatched in a backyard flock in New Orleans, Louisiana, are looking for a new home. They are a few weeks old now and have been receiving great care from mother hen, but there isn't room for any more chickens in this backyard! They will be great little egg layers and wonderful...
Gulf Coast, you say? How about New Orleans?
I am looking for a new flock of pet chickens to replace my first flock, which turned out to be ALL roosters. We've been nursing our broken hearts for the last few months and are finally ready to start again.
I've had this huge dilemma, though...
Willing to travel a few hours any direction from New Orleans to buy 4 sexed chicks. We'd prefer bantams, but standards are fine, too. Just can't repeat the rooster fiasco of 2008, which left us with no birds and broken hearts.
Hey neighbor,
How is the ankle doing? I don't have any advice as I'm a bit of a novice, but I wanted to say hi because I'm your neighbor in New Orleans. I've been looking for people in our area who raise chickens, too, and here you are!
I am in between flocks right now, but I'm chomping at...
Harv,
I live in the New Orleans area, too, and after reading your posts about Kiwi, it looks like you had a really good vet to take her to. I've been worried that if I ever needed to, I wouldn't know where to go with my girls, so can you recommend the vet that helped Kiwi to me?
I've been looking for people from New Orleans with chickens! Now that they've got the Google search box on the forum, I can finally find them.
Hi!
First off, our chickens names are Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. But they turned out to be roosters (the saga is preserved in my posts to this...
Thank you all for the guidance and sympathy.
Okay, if I'm facing the inevitable, could someone please tell me what would be a good situation for me to try to find for them? (And why, if you don't mind explaining.)
The stuff I've read makes it sound like it could be tough for them to be added...
I thought I was getting 3 pet hens, but it turns out they're roos. By the time I found out, I was already really attached. I live in a compact neighborhood and the neighbors recently complained about the crowing because it was so early. Last week, we moved the coop into the garage and now the...
Yeah, when that second one stands up, it has the same tail feathers as the other two and even more of a comb. It's also at least 30% bigger than the other two. So, I guess they are going to have to go to a new home.
I'm going to go cry now.
Thanks for all of your help.
Thank you, I' don't know which breed they are either, but I think they're downright beautiful. I never get tired of watching them.
I read some stories of people's full-grown hens suddenly starting to crow. But since these chicks live without any male role model, it's not like they are imitating...
I have three chicks, now 3 months old. I got them from a farm without knowing their sex. A few mornings ago, one started crowing. Now, at least two of them are. I took a video of them this morning and posted it to youtube.com.
Here's the link:
I live in the city, so if they are roosters, I...
Thanks for all of your replies.
I'm not sure what breed they are, so I'm not sure if it's common for the females to have these kinds of tail feathers.
It would surprise me to find out that the lighter colored, non-aggressive one (Flora) is a pullet if the other two are roos, mostly because...
Thank you all for your replies. I took pictures this afternoon and downloaded them on my Picasa photo album.
Please keep in mind that these "girls" are my babies and the suspense is killing me. So I don't want to give them up, but if I HAVE to give them up (no roosters allowed in city-limits)...
Thank you for the quick response.
They have the whole backyard and I keep food available in two different spots. As it runs out, I replenish it. I only have one waterer, but they can easily all use it at the same time.
I live in the city, so any roosters are going to have to go back to the...
I've got three chicks, now about 11 weeks old. They have been inseparable since birth until this morning.
Throughout the day, two of them have repeatedly broken out fighting, pecking at each other, drawing blood. I broke up one fight a little while ago, but the tension is thick out in the...
