Do duck eggs taste like chicken eggs?

Can't comment on regular duck eggs but I have 19 female Muscovy and they lay the most wonderful rich great tasting eggs. I use to have free chickens as well but once I got the muscovies and tasted the eggs the chickens went bye bye. The Muscovy eggs taste better than the chicken eggs in...

    Mealworm rabbit manure experiment

Update. The mealworms have now grown to a size that some conclusions can be drawn. The bin that was 100% manure has about 50% as many MW as the control and is in decline. Mold was a constant problem in the bin so it is a failure. The bin that was 50% dried manure and 50% bran did much...

    Mealworm rabbit manure experiment

Today I saw the first tiny worms in the manure bin.......and the beetles are still alive so we know they are mating and laying eggs and those eggs are hatching. My bins are outside in a shed so it is warm and the warmer it is (within reason) the faster the entire cycle goes. In the next few...

    Mealworm rabbit manure experiment

I started with larvae so yes the pupated and the beetles are still alive and kicking. I have not seen worms yet in the 100% manure bin yet though have not really looked very hard. In the normal bins I do see very very tiny worms so I soon (I hope) to see worms in the manure bin. I will keep...

Great Gadget for keeping chickens out of your garden

I have had one called the Scarecrow for a few years. They work quite well. I use to use it to keep the deer out of my blueberry patches. It scares the daylights out of the deer and once it does they give it a wide birth even after I had moved it to a new area. The device will even work down...

    Mealworm farming

In my case it only happens when I did an overhaul. At some point in the raising process the frass builds up to a level that it needs removed. Doing that in a closed room was a very bad idea.....well that and the fact I had no idea I was allergic to it. Now that I know I have no problems with...

    Mealworm rabbit manure experiment

Well I can tell you the ducks like the mealworms as much as the chickens do. Just a small update as all the pupae have hatched so it is on it's way.

What did you do in the garden today?

Tore out a 75 foot row of mixed Ouachita and Natchez blackberries. Horrible sour things.....some people like them but it just depends on your soil I guess, here they are just nasty. I absolutely adore the huge and sweet Kiowa blackberries though they sure are thorny so this winter will order...

    fertilizer????

Generally they root best when growing actively but if your frost holds off it might. Lol yes just leave one:) I have never seen an arbor or pergola where they were multi stemmed from the ground though I'm sure some are but it would be a mistake. One of the visually appealing things about...

    Mealworm farming

It is probably the frass you are allergic too....at least that is what bothers me. Eyes tear, nose runs, throat closes lol......I have many bins of them and only mess with the frass or seperating the worms from the bran and frass outside with a mask on and then have no reaction.

    fertilizer????

It is probably safe to take it out now lol:) You do have a bit of a tangle. First job come prune time is pick the best ONE of those shoots and remove the rest. If you want to save money you can shorten a couple of those shoots coming out of the base down to a couple feet and bend them down...

    fertilizer????

Mickey, If it was me I would wait till late winter and put in bareroots. If you had a month before frost I would say go now but it is just safer to wait.

    fertilizer????

Had no idea your winters were that mild. Try to keep them spaced out 8 feet apart, crowded won't help production. You would be probably better off to plant them in late winter/early spring but that being said I planted my vines in November and they were fine. How long until your first frost?

    fertilizer????

Mickey, Bear in mind my winters here may be a little different than yours :) OB's suggestion of pruning after you see what if anything was damaged is a good one, that isn't something I have to worry about here. In PA we winter pruned as well but your winters may be worse than there also, I...

Is it OK to put Coffee Grounds in the chicken run

I know you didn't ask but if you are looking to start BSF for the birds very wet coffee grounds attract them faster than anything else.

So I now have a $500 goose...Sadly, Frenchy's wing comes off next week

CMV, If there are any sportsman clubs in your area perhaps contact them looking for someone who calls coyotes. Failing that you could try a wounded rabbit call as it takes the element of surprise away and when using the call and being watchful you will have the advantage. They work like a...

    feeding produce to flock?

If you grow thinner rind watermelons they will eat rind and all. When I give my chickens and ducks watermelon it disappears completely.
