I went home at lunchtime and she's doing pretty well considering - the "thing" is really dried up and looks ready to fall off. She's fluffed up nicely (except where she's a bit "yolky") and she's alert and pecking away at the floor! I don't want to tempt fate, but I think she might be ok! Hubby...
I'm more and more convinced that this is an unabsorbed yolk sac and that it has burst during hatching. I'm tempted from what I've read to cut it off and cauterise because I'm thinking that will give the chick the best chance! This hatching business is far too stressful!
Pics show the thing on her bottom as well as I can photograph. It looks like it has blood vessels in it though - which is a worry. It does look like its starting to dry up at the end though. You can also see the yellowy (yolk?) stuff all over the incubator floor and on the thermometer in the top...
It's about an inch and a half long and not uniform in width - it bulges towards the middle. She is walking around a little and she tried to help the other chick out of her shell. She's still very gummy and the incubator was covered in dried up bits of yellowy stuff (yolk?) inside her egg shell...
Our first ever chick hatched overnight but she has something hanging from her rear - I'm not sure if it's unabsorbed yolk or her intestine. It's red ish rather than the yolk colour.I'll post a pic as soon as I get into work - cant figure how to do it from phone. Our bantam chick hatched 5 mins...
I am a total idiot and have clearly gotten myself in such a state of panic over these eggs that I mistook a little speck of styrofoam from the bator for a lump on the white Banty egg! Went to take a pic and touched it and realised what it was! Thanks for the replies guys - thankfully the only...
It's the same colour as the shell - I didn't touch it but it looks hard and I can't see any cracking. It looks similar to the little irregular bumps of shell you sometimes see on eggs ( tho I've only ever seen them on store bought eggs) but I'm 99% certain it wasn't there before today. I'll try...
Our definitely fertilised bantam egg has been in the incubator for 10 days and we can see the chick very clearly - she's wriggling around like crazy when we candle the egg. Tonight I noticed a lump on the outside of the shell - what could this be?! I know it's not unheard of for bantams to hatch...
Oh no! I'm terrified of one getting dropped when we're candling... But maybe the scotch tape will have stopped bacteria penetrating and all will be fine. Fingers crossed for you.
Oh my goodness duckies! I thought for a minute you stole our drake! Thanks for posting the picture. He's definitely very similar to our boy! I hope ours is a pekin cross and our girls are Pekins cos then we should get three quarter pekin ducklings! Thanks for the welcome Miss Lydia and I'll...
Hmmm - Swedish black does indeed seem to be a possibility for our drake! I'm sure our girls aren't pure bred Pekins though (or pure bred anythings to be fair!). They're no where near upright enough to be pure Pekin - they seem much more Aylesbury-ish in their build and gait even without the pink...
Hi everyone,
We'd love some help figuring out what breed our drake is. We were given him by a friend of a friend and have no idea what he's "meant to be"!! The closest I can guess from looking around the net is a mallard but he has no ring around his neck. We've bred him with our (probably)...
