Our friendliest is our EE named Martha. Most times she is willing to be picked up and carried around unless she is busy doing her chicken business such as looking for bugs and stuff.
Im in Connecticut and we arn't looking so special either. My ladies feed inside the coop and water outside in the run.
I planned on wrapping the sides of the run with tarps to try and keep the winds and rain down to a min and also to cover the window openings also. overkill? or waste of time?
be sure to start with whats called "starter shingles". they are smaller pieces of shingle, usually half sheets, that are used to offset your shingle lines.
You can cut these yourself or you can buy them already cut to size.
If they dont really need the heat lamp you could try cutting back to a nightlight. Just so they are not in total dark. Of course im not one to talk. My chickies are 6 weeks now and i still have a heat lamp on in the coop at night. Makes me feel better for now
Some of my chickies like mealworms, some don't. Others earthworms others dont but flies are a popular favorite! Its a 50-50 on the flies the poop that attracts the flies is bad but the flies are fun!
you could modify a leveling rake by adding hardware cloth to the blade. this would allow sand to go through but collect the poo and still offer good reach.
My chicky ladies are 5+ weeks now and will be going outside soon. With the heat lamp in the coop just to make me feel better. All are 95% feathered so i think they will be ok.
I have them out during the days when the weather is good without any issues

with those vents placed at or close to the ridge line you should get a good draw of fresh air through the chickens door and even better airflow with the windows open. If you are really concerned about heat in the coop you could go with a roof vent. The spinning type one actually has an insert...
