I have shingles that we got free...I haven't looked very closely but I imagine they are asphalt shingles....what else do I need? Nails - my husband will have to dig something up from the garage - we're okay there....but do I have to put tar paper or something under them? Anything else??

Thank you!!

Yes, a good heavy tar paper/felt would be good. Hammer stapler works faster. Drip edge would also be good. This allows water to drip off the edge of the shingle, and not back up and run down the facia boards. Drip edge comes in aluminum, white or brown, at Home Depot, and is quite affordable. A few sticks of it ought to do you.

A chalking gun and a tube of roof cement is always handy. Roofing nails. 1 1/4 is a good size to handle between your fingers. Shorter roofing nails can be a bugger to "set".
A T-square or speed square to cut straight lines, a chalk line is nice to make your layout straight. A good utility knife with a package of 5 fresh blades and change reasonably often.

I assume someone is experienced in laying shingles and will oversee the project. Pick the coolest day you can, or work only in the early mornings and evenings. In super hot weather, shingles are easy to mark and smear. Enjoy!!!

be sure to start with whats called "starter shingles". they are smaller pieces of shingle, usually half sheets, that are used to offset your shingle lines.

You can cut these yourself or you can buy them already cut to size.

Like everyone else has said, Tar Paper will do it ( On a house I use Ice and Water Shield no need on the coop and is a lot more money ) I would not just use any nails your husband Finds, Get roofing nails, Tar paper can be put down with staples, I wouldn't spend the money on start tabs, just use A cut down shingle, Google starter course, I would use drip edge save the wood from rotting, I would put a vented ridge on the coop, and if you want to put a roof vent in now is the time.
