    hen's back picked bloody

Update: I saw the same thing happening again to another SLW today in the coop. I have 6 of these all the same age and they seem to be going into molt, including the rooster. They start to lose feathers and the others start to pick them out for them, to the point of making them bloody. 2 are...

    hen's back picked bloody

So I checked in on my chickens around noon and found one hen who had been pecked really bad on her back to the point of bleeding. She has a bloody bald patch on her back at least 2" square and the back of her neck has been pecked, but not bloody. She was fine 4 hrs before. I think she started...

    rescued chickens

A fellow farmer friend of mine heard about some chickens abandoned alongside of a logging road. They were there for probibly 3 days in 3 feet of snow and below 0 temperatures, no shelter. There were 6, 2 died. She rescued them to her basement. They are eating, but one is wheezing pretty bad...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

For all you vegans: I also grow a big garden, to feed my family and animals. Do you wear leather, either on your coat or boots? Better check your closet! I am sure that if you deeply checked your lifestyle you will find you are using animal products somewhere. Don't be so quick to judge. If...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

This used to be a thread that I tuned into every day to take the edge off. Lately I'm not amused but concerned. I've seen another favorite thread of mine shut down because of being continually off topic. This is a place to tell funny stories and jokes ain't it? I really enjoy and look...

    First time incubating

Glad I found this thread. Here's a newbie question. I'm planning to start a hatch in about a month. I get between 7-9 eggs a day. I want to have up to 24 in my incubator. How do I keep the eggs I want till I get the right amount. I have no broody hens and my coop is too cold to let the eggs...

Too cold to let the girls out?

It's -35*C here with the wind chill in New Brunswick. These guys don't seem to mind considering they have an insulated coop that stays above 0*C. If thay get cold, they go stand under the heat lamp for a minute and head right back out. Too cold for me!

Looking or silver laced Wyandotte hatching eggs

I know a breeder who has them. I dont know if he ships eggs or not, but I know he has chicks starting around march, as I get mine from him. I dont know where you are, but we're in NB, Canada. That might be an issue also. If youre interested, i can put you in touch with him to find out.

When I first started looking for chickens, light sussex were the first breed I wanted. I couldn't find them. I was wondering where you did. Maybe someone on here might know someplace preferably in NB to find them. Hatching eggs would work too. Thanks.

McD's is good for one thing: If you ever have to "clean yourself out", eat a Big Mac. Within an hour, I'll be in the bathroom for about an hour. Learned my lesson.....

Yup, got them from C&S. At 6 months, they probibly weigh about 6-7 lbs. They're the fattest roosters i've got. I thought they'd be prettier. They're very well behaved though. Do you think you need a rooster for your girls? I'd like to see them go to a good home.

5~6 week old RIR & Sussex - Pullet or Cockerel?

my opinion: your light sussex is a hen, speckled is a rooster, RIR is a rooster. Let me know how I did!
