We have 10 total chickens - 8 hens and 2 roosters. 6 were straight run in the beginning so we didn't know how many roosters/hens we had, and we lost two 3 months ago. The roosters have never shown any aggression towards other hens, or us, until about a week - two weeks ago they started attacking...
I came home a little earlier today to see that one of my hens had been pecked on the back of her neck, my guess is by one of the roosters. They have been doing this a lot, but never hard enough to break skin. Which I try to discourage when I catch them. I flushed the wound with water then...
I went to go let my chickens out this morning, they are free range, I heard about 5 or 6 crows all making quite a lot of noise. At closer inspection it looked like they were attacking two or three fairly large birds of prey. I originally thought it was hawks. But as the larger birds settled into...
There is not a run right now. Just the coop. I've been meaning to build one for a few weeks but haven't found the time. Four more ended up making their way back before night fall tonight. They made it back into the coop where it was warm and they had food and water. So we only lost two of the...
~♪~♫~♪~Where oh where have my little chickies gone? Oh where oh where can they be? With feathers cut short and some cut long. Oh where oh where are they? Are they hiding just for fun or have they lost their way? Now the search has just begun, I hope I find them today! ~♪~♫~♪~
So, I don't...
I have a total of 12 chicks. 6 are straight run columbian rocks, and 3 are "pullets" and three are "red pullets" (TSC didn't give me more info on their breed than that...) Well, the last about 48 hours, two of the columbian rocks who have slightly longer combs (i think? The one on their beak)...
Brought my three and a half week (although I'm convinced they are a little older...) Columbian Rocks for their first "field trip" into the outside world today. It was warm enough for them to be outside for about 45 minutes before having six chicks and my 12month old toddler outside got a little...
TSC didn't tell me what they were. I looked up some pictures of California Whites, you may be right. I'll probably have a better idea (maybe) when they get their feathers. I'm a first time chicken momma so I don't know too much about the breeds other than what I'm told, and what research I've done.
Thank you! I clean it off their feet mostly when I pick them up so it doesn't end up all over my hands, which it usually does anyhow. I'll probably end up cleaning it once every week or week and a half. Got done twice last week because I moved them to a bigger brooder after day 2 of having them...
She appears to be drinking normally. There is room for all of them to be outside the light if they wish. I haven't seen her panting since I held her for a bit. So I'm thinking it was anxiety. I've been checking her every hour or so.
Thank you, I took her out for about a half hour and held her. She seems to be doing fine now. Hoping it was just a little anxiety from being in a new environment.
The one that was panting was the yellow one that is sort of laying down in front. Not sure if you know what breed she is.
I just got a 6 new baby chick aprox. 2 wks old. Other than TSC labeling them "pullets & red pullets" I have no idea what bread they are. I got them maybe 4 hrs ago. They are in their brooder, with everything set up. There is room to get away from the light if needed. But one of the "normal"...
Greetings and welcome from Massachusetts!
We just started our flock a week ago, so far we only have 6 Columbian Rocks. I still don't know what other breeds I want to get yet! I like the Jersey Giants though, if we can find them we may get some of those too!
It's a fairly new store, been there maybe a year? We live in a small town, there are a lot of farms around. So one way or another both employees and customers end up getting a lot good info! Glad your are doing well! Other than a slightly pasted up bum on one of mine which was resolved all of...
