Free: Lavender Orpington rooster (Enumclaw, WA)

I haven't posted anything at our local feed store, but that's a good idea. I'm not sure which state thread you're referring to. Are those within the buy-sell-trade, rehoming, or another part of the forums?

    Lavender Orpington rooster (Enumclaw, WA)

Not yet. He's still running around my back yard. :)

Free: Lavender Orpington rooster (Enumclaw, WA)

We have a three month old Lavender Orpington rooster that we raised from a chick, but can't keep in our neighborhood. He has a gentle disposition and would make a great addition to someone else's flock. :) Free to a good home!

    Lavender Orpington rooster (Enumclaw, WA)

We have a sweet, three month old lavender Orpington rooster in need of a good home. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to have roosters in our neighborhood, but I would keep him if I could!

At some point, I'll update this with more information on the coop I'm building and our chicks. For now, here are the pictures. :) The coop plan. Minor changes were made as it was built but you get the general idea. For reference, here's the first draft of my coop before I read more than I...

    Easter Eggers!

Here's my Ameraucana/EE, Veronica, at 3 and 9 days old: ...then at two weeks: ...then five weeks, during the Skeksi phase, as my wife called it: ...and at 16 weeks, taken just a few days ago! She's the sweetest of the bunch and easy to pick up. Sadly, she's also working her way to...

Is 16 weeks too early to introduce layer feed?

Hi there, My four hens will be 16 weeks old this Wednesday and I'm down to the last few pounds of grower feed. Can I start mixing in layer feed now or should I wait and buy another bag of grower feed? Thanks!

Is a heat lamp absolutly necessary?

Quote: I also bought a 100W heat lamp for lizards at the pet store. Since I am keeping the chicks in a bathroom, I didn't want them to get too hot and 250W seemed like overkill. The 100W bulb has worked very well for us and our four chicks. If I were raising more, a larger bulb capable of...

Thermometer: best kind? Where did you get yours?

I just raided the kitchen and used our candy thermometer. The markings went down to 75 degrees and were in five-degree increments. Not very precise, but good enough for ballparking their comfort—along with checking their behavior. Although I started out laying it in the coop with the...

    Where to keep chicks?

Quote: This is what I ended up doing for our four chicks. Took two medium-sized moving boxes, cut down the center and along the bottom edige of one side on each box, flared the flaps, and then nested one box inside the other. As they grew, I just pulled the two sides apart to expand their...

    Coop chicken door

Quote: Rather than making it heavy, you could try incorporating a gate latch into the design, with the rope attached to the catch. Any sort of latch will do more to prevent critters from entering your coop without making the job of opening and closing the chicken door a literal pain. Just my...

Painting the inside of the coop...

I would also wait 24 hours if you're painting the whole thing at once. If you can't put the chickens somewhere else overnight, you might get away with painting the inside in small sections over several days to keep the fumes down.

    Coop insulation?

Quote: Hi cattbird, I'm in a similar climate and do not plan on insulating my coop. The only place where I might consider insulating is underneath the roof to keep temperatures down in the summertime. From what I've read, the reflective, bubble-wrap insulation can work well there and isn't...

    how high off the ground?

Quote: I'm currently building a coop on stilts so the run can extend underneath for some shade. It's about 20" (nearly 24" between the floor joists) and designed for full-sized chickens. Here's a shot of it so far. The grass is hiding the 2x4s around the base—gotta get the chickens in there to...

How many chickens will fit in this coop?

Quote: Hi annek, Thanks for your input! The coop is five feet deep so that I could extend the run an even two feet for every chicken that I would add—that made some other parts of the construction a pain but this is my first (last?) time building a coop! I am planning to cover the run...

How many chickens will fit in this coop?

Hi there, Without telling you exactly how many chicks I have—it's less than six—I'd like your advice on how many chickens I can comfortably fit in the coop I am building. Here is a picture of the coop so far (sorry about the 2x4s propped up in front): Factoring the internal framing and a...

Hens? 5 week-old BOs, EE, and BR

Thank you for the guidance! It really gives me some peace of mind, particularly with such a small flock.

Hens? 5 week-old BOs, EE, and BR

Quote: Hi LilPeeps, Thanks for the second opinion! I really hope that's the case, particularly with the first Buff Orpington. She is, by far, my favorite of the bunch. I hope the pictures are okay. I have a hard time getting pictures without them climbing all over me!

Hens? 5 week-old BOs, EE, and BR

Perhaps it's a little early, but I'm wondering if all of my not-so-little chicks are girls. I bought four sexed pullet chicks from the local feed store, who in turn ordered them from Privett Hatchery. Here's Buff Orpington #1: Here's Buff Orpington #2. In the second shot, #2 is on the left...

Factoring in deaths or mis-sexed chicks when buying for a small flock

Quote: I would if I had the space, but I really don't. With four, our coop and run would barely be large enough—the coop has about 16 square feet of floor space; the run, 40. I'd rather give them a little extra room than stress them out. Granted, the run isn't built yet, so it could get...
