How much is the normal drop in egg production? I have 8 pullets (7 RIR Mixes, and a Brahma). We were getting between 6 and 7 eggs a day. Now we are only getting 1! A huge drop off and all of a sudden.
At first I wondered if the eggs were being eaten, but there has been no evidence of shells or...
Here's an example. The largest is 93 grams. The middle is an average 'large' 60 gram egg. The smallest is a small pullet egg. Most of our eggs are of the middle variety... except the one RSL giving us the "behemoth" egg.
Indeed! The first one I got really through me for a loop (my girls have only been laying for about 2 months).
Thanks for the tips!
I feed them Layena pellets, some scratch (my mix of birdseed (millet, sunflower, basics), cracked corn, and oyster shell), and the occasional garden reject...
One of my hens, either a RSL or a RIR (not sure which of the hens it is) is consistently (several days a week) laying eggs upwards of 90 grams. I feel like I could pitch it at a baseball game and no one would notice :)
Most of these are double yolks, which doesn't bother me (its great for...
Any eggs yet? We are up to four eggs again from our Eight hens.. looking forward to the days of 7 or 8!
They are funny in the morning. The run is a noisy place between the cock-a-doodle-dooing and the bawk-bawk-baGAWKing. Its like christmas. Some of the girls get right down to it, and others...
I tossed a couple of golf balls in the nesting boxes to set an example. It took about a week of consistent laying to get our Brahma to finally lay in the box yesterday. (she had been laying in the run, then moved to the coop, then finally got comfy with her nest boxes)
Other than that, the...
I would like to know this too. I have a pullet doing the same type of thing. Not lethargic, though. I think thats the wrong word... Since I've been on an egg watch this week, all seemed normal, the squat, and all. And I've been out to the run every few hours. Usually I can count on my 8 pullets...
Going on a week now. I have two girls that will do the "squat" if I try to pet them, but still no eggs. One of the golf balls was out of the nest box though, so I suppose someone went in to check it out... Just surprised there has been no other egg activity all week. Most people I read see an...
I guess I'll be laughing at this in three months when I have more eggs than I know what to do with.
Thanks, everyone. I'm just feeling a little EAGER! I'm excited!
Thank you. Very Helpful. Still haven't seen any other eggs. I am hoping to see more soon! I am checking several times a day.. Looking forward to a fresh omelet!
The whites were about half and half... I haven't heard the egg song yet, but honestly, I have no idea what that sounds like. When I...
I have six Red SLs, 1 RIR, and 1 Brahma. My guess on the Reds is that they are about 15 weeks old, and based on what I know about the Brahma, she's about 2 months older (purely an educated guess because I adopted her later). Anyway, I guess I wasn't expecting eggs for another couple of months...
I have the same question. Our silkie "hen" just started crowing.... whoops...
He's not aggressive so I thought I would keep him, but now I am concerned about breeding, which is not what we intended to do when we got chickens. We barely have room for the ones we have! I think I have to post in a...
Thanks! I don't know when he hatched, but I am guessing he's about 5 months old, based on the info we got from his original owner. He's the only silkie we have, so pics of the others may not do any good. Thats the only time I've seen/heard him crow thus far, so he may not flap every time.. I...
Well, I don't know why I always assumed this silkie was a hen - all my other chicks were sexed, but I adopted the silkie later and just lumped "it" in with "The girls."
So this morning when I was out in the garden I heard a very distinctive crow (several back to back, actually) and noticed...
