    Chicken walk very difficult

Odd; she looks alert and has good color, I don't think she would if it was a disease issue. If it were me, I'd wait it out if she is eating/drinking okay and not suffering; otherwise maybe a vet visit if that's an option. Check/feel her underside as well as her legs for anywhere that looks off.

Weaving, looks drunk, off balance = molting!

I'm not super-experienced with chickens, having had them on grandma's farm as a kid and I have had my current flock for about 4 years now. A few weeks back they went through a really dramatic molt (one lost pretty much every feather at once) and two hens started acting really squirrelly. One...

Sebastopol gosling with Tick and swollen foot

I just took a pair of ticks off a hen...her face is still surprisingly swollen, but doesn't seem to be an infection and she's acting fine. I wonder if birds have stronger/longer reactions than our mammal pets?

    Tick Bite Reaction--Swollen Eye

Hi, just adding to this thread, and wondering if any of the initial responders had updates about how the birds did after tick bites. I removed two tiny ticks from my Jersey Giant's eyelid two days ago. The swelling isn't worse, and might be slightly better on the affected side but she looks a...

    Swollen itchy face? Suggestions?

Took off two tiny ticks, clustered together. Her face is still somewhat puffy, definitely more on the side where the ticks were, but she is scratch on and shaking her head less and still eating and drinking fone, so I figured leaving her be was better than obsessing about it. I did put topical...

    Swollen itchy face? Suggestions?

Came home today and saw that one of my hens has a puffy swollen face on one side... Swollen eyelid, and down side of face. Eye not swollen shut, and looks okay, just puffy and assymetrical. It looks like she may have a tiny soft-bodied tick in the eyelid crease; I'm waiting for my husband to get...

Fowl pox? Some other skin infection?

Stumped. No mites. Not frostbite. (Scabs are scattered all over comb, not only at tips and doesn't swell). Other hens show nothing like this. Some spots heal, new spots start. Guess I should just hope it passes. I have her separated for now, if it improves I'll have to take a closer look at the...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi PA people, I haven't been on this thread in awhile...I moved my hens back to Long Island with me...loving having them here! Only problem is posts on my local thread are very sporadic...you guys seem to be on here frequently, and I am in awe of your collective experience, so I was hoping for...

Fowl pox? Some other skin infection?

I have a 3 year old barred rock with comb that looks just like this! I tried to take a picture of her, but this image on backyard chickens is much better (thank you!) The scabs are black, not really raised or colored around the edges at all like other picture images I've seen. If it was just...

y are my hens not laying

I agree, probably a lighting issue. I keep the lights on in the coop until I go to bed, and 4 out of five are laying; the fifth is more slow to recover from her molt.

Converting a green house into a coop

There were some recent posts from people about using sand in runs and coops...some swear by it, others complain it's s problem if it can't dry well. If you search those threads, you might figure out how "damp" is acceptable. Deep litter method might work well over dirt, especially if you have...

Can I turn a cabin into a coop? - updated with photos

I agree that once it goes to the chickens, it would be too hard to reclaim...how about using the cabin for storage of food, etc and building a coop adjoining an exterior wall of the cabin? If you decide to only use part of the cabin's interior, I was thinking about partitioning my (predator...

Converting a green house into a coop

If you find the greenhouse gets too hot, maybe you can remove (and use wire) for select panels or just block some light with a tarp or plastic roof panels. I just bought a 20 dollar remote thermometer which lets me keep an eye on my coops temperature from the comfort of my kitchen. It might save...

coop/run on cobbles? will it be OK for the hens?

Would it be a problem to put a sand run over the cobbles if it wasn't working out? I can't imagine it would damage them...

DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

It's actually easy to open on either end to crawl into if necessary, but the easier way is to just pull up any of the stakes (about every 7 feet or so) and reach in. Luckily they'll come for treats, so I haven't had to go in after one yet. It definitely could fill in with snow, so I'll be...

DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Nice! I guess you can just line them up then? I was going to do something similar at first, but decided to commit the fixed position along the fence (my hubby is already being really tolerant about extra work due to chickens, so this actually gives him less lawn to mow and not much to move out...

DIY Thread - Let's see your "Inventions".

Amazed by everyone's ingenuity here! I'm afraid much of my setup is slapdash, but this project turned out well: These are pictures of my new "chicken tunnel" we added against the chain link fence in the back yard. It links up to my more fortified 6x18' chain link pen, and added a 3' x 70' feet...

    Is my coop too narrow?

Loved aart's idea about putting nesting boxes through the wall... Brilliant! You could maybe do that with PVC pipe feeders too.

    Is my coop too narrow?

Looks good, and you can also add a ramp to a shelf/ledge to add another level of floor space. Gives them a little more opportunity to get away from each other, helpful when they've been cooped up too long in bad weather I find...

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Harford Fair is another option if you missed Wayne County. Fond memories! I haven't been in a few years, but there is a website, and under "exhibitors" tab there are some poultry and apiary events. Starts August 18th and runs for five days I think.
