Hi All,

I have a sebastopol gosling ( 1 1/2 month old) that I noticed was limping this afternoon. We caught her up and she had a large bruise covering her two outer toes and up her ankle. it was swollen and slightly warm. In the swollen folds of her toes, I pulled a small lone start tick that was very slightly engorged. The bite wound bled a bit after removal.

I put her inside the stall to rest, applied skin and wound cleaner to the foot. I didn't see any other ticks, but will check again later.

I am concerned about the large bruise and continuing to bleed. Do ticks in geese cause any anti-coagulation issues?

I am hoping she was trying to peck it off and caused her own bruise, rather than the tick bite caused the internal bleeding/clotting issue.

Not much info out there about ticks and geese. Except for one guy in Australia losing them to tick paralysis. Any ideas/help would be great.

Thanks!

I don't think I've ever heard of geese having ticks, hopefully with a little time the swelling will go down and the bruise will heal, you could try soaking her foot in some warm Epsom salt water it's real good for swelling and imflamation just don't let her drink any it's also a laxative. I use a small bucket and put half to 1 cup of ES to a half to 1 gal of warm water stick both feet into the bucket since it's easier. soak as long as she'll let you without stressing too much. Let us know how she is.

We get star ticks around here, though having said that, I´ve never actually seen one. I know we do get them because of the capibara here that host them. I´ve never seen a tick on my geese, but then geese are so finicky they´d pull them off.
Now, what about playing with this blu-kote and seeing how much mess can be made?

I thought it was weird, I've never seen a tick on any of the other geese or ducks. And I def know they are out there!

So our baby rested in the stall with her teenage husband. She was not limping at all at evening check.

This AM her swelling was all gone and her bruise was shrinking/condensing. She had a little limp when running full speed/wings out. At evening check it looked even better. So I skipped the traumatic epsom salts. I will def do them if it doesn't keep progressing.

Thanks for the moral support!

She´ll probably be fine.

Just to keep an infection from starting can you put some iodine or betadine spray or Veterigyn on it daily for about 5 to 7 days. Just to be safe....

I just took a pair of ticks off a hen...her face is still surprisingly swollen, but doesn't seem to be an infection and she's acting fine. I wonder if birds have stronger/longer reactions than our mammal pets?

Your talking about a female goose or a chicken hen? Not sure about reaction part just keep an eye on any out of the ordinary way she may act, ticks carry quite a few diseases that may or may not affect our poultry. You could put some ACV in her drinking bucket for her to wash her face in ACV has some anti bacterial proprieties and may help with swelling. 1 Tab to 1 gal of water.

Also just thought I'd add that a misting of a garlic water solution is a safe and all natural flea, mite, and tick prevention. These biters despise the taste, and won't suckle on a garlicky pet! I've done this for 10 years with all my critters and have never had a flea or tick issue. And if it's obtainable in your area, food grade DE is a real blessing when dealing with all types of creepy crawlies and internal parasites as well. ACV (apple cider vinegar) is also a highly recommended treatment and preventive. Back when I had my farm, I used all three as I was raising organically with no pesticides or antibiotics.

"Adding fresh garlic cloves to their water or garlic powder to their feed is also a preventative since parasites don't seem to like the taste of the blood of chickens that have garlic added to their diet. The garlic will also help boost your hens' immune systems while you are treating them."

"To treat the chickens themselves, spray them with a garlic juice mixture. This treatment has been found by poultry scientists in the UK to have a 100% kill rate over 24 hours. This can be used as a treatment and also as an ongoing preventative.

To make Natural Mite Garlic Juice Spray you will need:

10 ounces of water
1 ounce of garlic juice

Mix in a spray bottle and spray fowl bi-weekly as a preventative or every other day for two to three weeks in the case of an infestation. Concentrate around the vent and under the wings. Dusting your chickens with DE after spraying them is also recommended, taking care not to get the dust in their (or your) eyes or lungs. "
