This morning I discovered that one of my chickens died last night in the coop. No signs of intruder. The other 3 are fine. When my husband picked her up, she had something round bloody stuck in vent hole. It was a mess. Does this mean she had a broken egg inside? She seemed fine yesterday.
ok thanks! for a while i was going out in the morning and putting the boxes where they lay them, just to keep them clean, then removing the boxes when i collect the eggs. But thy kick the shavings out of the boxes and lay them outside the box! i'll try the fake eggs! Thanks!
My 4 hens are great layers but will not lay them in the nesting boxes. They prefer to lay them under the roosting bar. Should I try to break this habit or just accept it?
Well I'm not sure should I separate, or if they are always all together, will they just take care of each other? I guess I should count this as day 1? They sit on them sometimes and lay eggs, adding to the bunch, but this is the first day she just hangs out for long stretches at a time...
I'm brand new to this. I decided to let my hen hatch her fertilized eggs the day after my rooster was killed. They are Americauna. The oldest egg was 8 days today. I have tried candling them and some look very much developed. Today she started sitting on them and turning them, well I'm not...
well i wanted to mark the eggs today so I could tell the difference between the new eggs. Can I collect the new eggs from here on out? leaving the marked ones out there? When i went out this morning, I was surprised that the eggs were all warm! I candled them again and could see in some eggs...
I am new to this. This year is my first year to ever have chickens. I bought my chicks one day after hatching and they all survived up till last week. something killed the 1 rooster I had. However, that rooster had fertilized our hens already. So I am leaving the eggs in the box and the hens...
oh I bet we will both see a change once they are laying eggs. Now that my Leghorn has started laying eggs, she is going in more on her own :) Our window does have a screen but kind of worry about the air circulation. Our temps have been insane this summer! HOT HOT HOT
Actually i got all 5 hens together at the same time, and they have always been together since I brought them home. She was the only one who was always off to the side not interacting much with the others. as a tiny yellow chick, she seemed to want to stay with me all the time, followed my...
She is precious and I have spent time out there with her today. She has not tried to bite today but when she comes up to me i hold her. I noticed when i pet her back she lays down in kind of a submission position, so maybe now that I understand what is going on, I can correct. I was guessing...
thank you for the advice! I think this is exactly what she is doing! I'm so thankful my 4 year old is alright! Now I know not to let him inside with her! They are just at that age where they are challenging the other chickens too. Pecking order really makes sense! I sure wish I could...
not sure why really, but i have 4 hens and 1 roo that are all 17 weeks old and they used to go into coop at night on their own, but now are perching on top of coop too. I was wondering if its too hot in there right now
I bought 5 chickens from a farm store. One of them is larger than the others, white with tints of yellow, and I do not know the breed of this one. She has always been the sweetest! perches on my arm, wants me to pet her, eats from my hand....She has been more of a pet than I ever expected...
wow this was a while ago, but now the same hen is still biting! She is super friendly and lets me hold her anytime. But she chases me sometimes and will sneak up behind me and bite hard enough to break the skin! I think she is expecting us to feed her meal worms, but if I didn't know better I...
