It's a covered coop and it gets decent drainage but I haven't been scooping as much as I should. I'll keep it up and then maybe mix in some new sand when the weather is dry again.
Thanks for the advice!!

Scooping the poop like a kitty's litterbox daily is what is recommended. My...
I put 4" of sand over gravel in my coop over the summer and I didn't have to do anything with it. It was nice and dry and all the poop disappeard, it was fabulous. But we've gotten a lot of rain this winter and after a few weeks of rain I went out and the sand was all packed on top and it...
Thanks Pat! I was hoping that was the answer, that it would compost. That's wonderful. I'm sure in the winter when things are wetter it might need a little more attention but now that the weather is warm and dry it's great. Almost seems to easy!!! I will check and make sure there isn't...
We live in a very mild climate so the coop and run are connected. It's 5' x 6' x 6' 6" tall with a roof on top and has solid panels on the back end and 1/3 of two sides for cover, their roost and nest boxes are in that area but it isn't enclosed and the rest of the sides and front are covered...
Okay, the sand is great and I thank everyone who answered my questions. To preface my questions here is the scoop..... I have a layer of gravel on my side yard that is on top of the dirt it's been there for awhile so there is some that has sunk into the dirt and some loose on top. We put the...
I have my coop/run set up and it's on a gravel area so before I move my chickens in I'd like to put a few inches deep of sand on the gravel. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of sand are. Is it considered deep litter? How often and what are the best methods of cleaning it out? Do they...
Is sand considered deep litter? I am considering using it in my coop/run. Do you just rake it and turn it and let it be? What do you do when it's time to really clean it out??

Sewer rats, yikes!! I live in a suburban area and I've had my chickens almost a year. I haven't had any predator problems so far. Right now I just have a tractor on my lawn that gets moved about once a week. I think the biggest predators we have are racoons (though I haven't seen any around...
I have a large area on my side yard that is all gravel on top of dirt. We put several inches in height there about 4 years ago. A couple of inches have sunk down but there is still plenty above the dirt. The gravel area is about 8 x 13' and the coop is going to sit on it at 5 x 6' so there...
It sounds like those of you who use the deep litter method use it in enclosed coops. Can it also be used in a more open coop w/ a roof? Like this one? http://www.mypetchicken.com/Chicken_Coop_Plans-Chicken_Coop_Building_Plans___two_sets_-P361.aspx
Thanks!

Oh, how sad! I'm sorry!
Maybe gravel would not be necessary? But I probably would have to do some kind of predator proofing. My main question is if keeping in one spot and using the deep litter method is a good idea or not?!! I let them out daily in good weather to run around too...
Thank you for the advice! True about the gravel... so maybe I'll just leave it in one spot. So far I haven't had a problem with predators but we move the coop about twice a week. I guess I'll have to do some predator proofing too huh? I'm just wondering if this is really feasible or if I...
I have a 4' x 4' tractor from coopsforyou.com and I am considering adding a 4' x 4' extension to make it 4' x 8' and then leave it in a more permanent spot, maybe moving it every so often. Not on my lawn but on the side yard or something. Can I put gravel on the ground under it and use the...
Ahhh, okay, thanks so much! So what do I put on a floor of an outdoor run w/ a roof on it?? Just leave it bare dirt? Maybe that should be a new thread.....
Amber
Oh, I am planning for it to have a roof of some kind. Then shavings would be fine right? Isn't that what people are talking about when they talk about the deep layering method?
The tractor would be great if I had a BIG yard but my yard isn't that big. And we have a dog and playset out there...
I'm considering using the dog's kennel (dog hasn't used it for years) for the chickens but the floor is all gravel on top of the dirt. Is that okay if I just put shavings on top of the gravel?
Right now I am using a tractor coop from Coops4You. They free range at least half the day almost...
Great suggestions! I am a chicken newbie and I just found this forum. I have no idea what I'm doing but my chickens, who are 3 months old, seem very healthy. On this forum I'm reading of all these illnesses and things the chickens can get and I'm freaking out!! I have never used medicated...
Thank you very much!! I like your ideas!
So would cleaning out the feeder/waterer with soap and water once a week be good? Should I do it more often than that and should I use a bleach solution?
Thanks!!
