Thanks. How do I dust them? Just sprinkle it all over them or is there a technique?

    Help with vent lice

I've read that coconut oil will remove the eggs. Otherwise I recommend using sevin dust to dust all your birds, repeat dusting in 7-10 days. Do the same thing inside the coop and nests.

    Help with vent lice

Hi all. I have three hens with terrible vent lice. I've been rubbing DE on their bums with little luck. It's been about a month since I noticed the lice eggs on their feathers and still can't seem to get rid of them. They all look and act healthy other than this lice. Help please!!!

    Chickens suddenly attacking!!!

So recently one of my "chickens" (I am still not sure if male or female-about 16 weeks old now) has suddenly started to attack my feet/legs and biting my hands when I enter the fenced area we keep thier coop and run in. Prior to this, our sweet "girl" Goldie was always so docile and sweet. We...

    how to cool down chickens?..

I give mine ice water. They love that. When it got in the 100s here in souther Georgia, I thought I was gonna lose my chickens. One thing that really seemed to help was putting ice blocks in the run. I double bagged ziplocks and froze them overnight. Then when it started getting hot I wrapped...

    Do chickens sunbathe??

You can get DE at your local TSC. That's where I got mine. Pretty cheap. You can mix it in thier sand. Should not be a problem. I was having issues with the sand in thier run stinking from thier poop abd pee- and with the rain here in Georgia. I bought sweet PDZ and put that in thier run and...

    Do chickens sunbathe??

The first time I saw it I thought for sure something had gotten a hold of her! She looked a mess! ;) I've introduced the "dust bucket" to my flock with DE, but no one really seems interested in it just yet. I think by the holes they've dug in thier run, they prefer the cold wet sand for now...

    Do chickens sunbathe??

So I've seen my chicken do this numerous times and I have to say the first time I saw it- I thought she was dead! Sometimes when I let my flock out during mid day hours one (a RIR, I think) will sprawl out on the ground-, legs, wings, everything - she will puff out her feathers and lay in the...

RIR - 13 weeks - Time to accept I got roosters!!??

I'm keeping my fingers crossed she is in fact a lady chicken! However, I have two others im still trying to decide on. One is a rooster as he's crowing. One tries crowing but it's pretty pathetic and few and far between crowing spouts. And the last is large like the other barred rock and starts...

    Just a random question....

So here's my question. Why do my chickens sometimes get really red faces (their combs, waddles and, i guess their earlobes??) and other times they are all a nice pale rosey pink? They are all acting fine and this is a change i've seen their faces make since they were hatched. Just wondering what...

RIR - 13 weeks - Time to accept I got roosters!!??

I think the first one is a pullet and the second is a roo. Her legs are slimmer. I think i have a RIR that is just over 10 weeks and I WANT to believe she is a girl because she is just so sweet. However, her comb is way bigger than either one of yours and she is younger. But her behaves so...

    13 week Dominique-gender?

I think they are both girls. I have barred rocks that look just like this, except I'm pretty sure at least one is a rooster because he has started crowing. The only difference i see, is my chicks have WAY bigger combs and they are just 10 weeks old. The one i thought was a girl is the one I...

    Deep litter for the run?

I've wondered the same question. We have a 7x4 run on our coop and have 4 birds. Poopy, pee smell is our problem too. We live in southern Georgia where there is ONLY sand. The problem is, even when the sand is dry... it still smells a little (and our run is completely open). I use pine shavings...
