A neighbor of mine had a silkie rooster that attacked her daily. She was heartbroken. She found someone on Craigslist who wanted to breed silkies and didn't mind he was aggressive (or thought he could handle the problem?).
For those of you with rooster experience - are there nice roosters...
Thanks for the replies. It made it through the night but it still doesn't look so great. It's having difficulty walking and eating and drinking by itself. The wound is really too noticable to put out with mom so I guess we'll just keep it in the house and see how it does.
Thanks for the replies. The chick is still alive but it doesn't look all that great. It doesn't walk very well and is having trouble eating and drinking by itself. I don't think I will be able to put it back with mom, the wound is really noticible as are it's other dificulties. I guess we'll...
I posted this on the incubating/hatching eggs board but wondered if there might be someone to help on this board. Please forgive the double posting, I'm just not sure what to do.
We've had an exciting morning watching as new baby chicks started popping out from under their momma!
However...
Actually now that I've gotten a better look at it the wound is pretty large - most of it's neck area on one side. I'm actually surprised that it's still alive. It's under a heat lamp right now, gave it some electrolite fluid and cleaned it's wound. I would hate to have to keep alone inside but...
We've had an exciting morning watching as new baby chicks started popping out from under their momma!
However, we saw a little baby laying in the sheds to the side of the mom. About an hour later it was still in the same spot, so I went in to retrieve what I thought was a dead chick. When I...
Thanks guys. I guess if they had a mamma hen she would teach them where to sleep - so putting them inside myself for awhile makes sense. Now to create a makeshift door to keep them in there until they learn to stay put
Hoping for some advice - I have 10 barred rock and RIR chicks that are 6 weeks old. Last night was their first full night in their new coop except no one actually went into the coop! All 10 stayed out in their enclosed run. It's predator proof and there is no flap or cover over the door...
From what I understand the oils in the cedar chips can irritate the lungs of various animals when used in a confined space (such as a chicken coop). I don't think there would be any danger of this happening outside in your yard.
Thank you, this is fabulous! And as far as manufacturing maybe you could make and sell them directly - we LOVE etsy.com. Imagine all the people just on this site who would be interested in them and chicken sweaters too!
We have 10 two week old chicks. They started trying to fly out of the brooder so I brought in some old window screens to put over top. The screens had a few ants on them who strayed inside the box - and the chicks went crazy trying to catch and eat them! The whole family was crowded around...
This question may be a bit premature seeing as we just received our chicks in the mail last week but, when they are ready to go outside I would love to let them free range around our yard. We have a 1/4 acre suburban yard with lots of foliage and garden space. We also have a play set area with...
Hi all and thank you for taking the time to read my introduction! After two years of trying to convince the hubbs to get chickens and like a whole year researching and learning about chickens we finally received our new babies in the mail on Tuesday. 5 barred rocks and 5 Rhode island reds safely...
