We had problem s with smell so we put 1 inch of limestone on our cay soil then sand then straw. Works great in covered run.
The uncovered run has leaves on top bare ground and its messy. We are thinking about concrete floor then leaves.
We also moved the coop to higher ground.
Good fences do make good neighbors... we have a rent farm next to us and they seem to take in stray cats and dogs by the dozen. I love animals but when the owners don't really care for them and let them roam where ever, then they should be prepared when they Disappear. our next door neighbor...
I was thinking the same thing about the natural selection, but don't want to share with the fox. LOL
I'm going to give the GSL a little time/tx and see what happens. It was almost cleared/cleaned up (no messy butt)before i went back to regular feed. This hen is the largest in the flock and the...
I've been lurking most of the day and reading -Finally caught up. Between hunting season and vacation... I ended up using a regular dry feeder for the girls while I was away. Bad idea...In 1 week.. and maybe it was just a coincidence but..
~Went from 8-9 eggs to 2-3 !!!
~ My GSL chicken...
8 weeks 2 days now...Nighttime temps were back up above 30 past week and I slowly weaned them off the light. (was only 45-50 degrees under light). They feathered out nicely. Everybody is living in coop but separated because of the feed issues..I'm looking for "all flock" to feed in place of...

I helped butcher broilers as a kid. looking back that was just...... life on the farm....... we butchered our own livestock all the time. I think its easier if you grow up with it, sort of "toughens you up". Last year i helped my mom butcher a few meaties with no problem-...
mine are feathered out but, It was in the 20's last night so at midnight i checked temps, they were acting a little cold so i broke down and turned the heat lamp on. wow did that confuse everybody ! breaking all the rules......at least i could sleep not worrying about the babies freezing .
I was afraid that the dark chick was a roo because of the longer neck feathers. guess I'll have to wait and see. The yellow is definitely a BO looking chick. We had closely checked egg color and watched the coop for BO eggs..Next time I'll separate to be sure.... I actually had a broody BR hatch...
The mom. Was supposed. To be a BO. However chancesare its not. Due to colouring. The others. Are RIR. BR. Or RSL. That red guy was a "pullet " in our purchase. Of RIR or the RSL. Maybe jumped in wrong bucket at the farm store :/
WOW its hard to keep up after taking few days away from this thread..Thank you bee for sharing all your knowledge and experience. My chickens are loving the leaves and stuff in the run. Still working to get the right FF mix-set up, so far they love it.. Everybody is definitely healthier, no...
Going to try healthier flooring changes my coop-run. Any thoughts? Currently have sand two to three inches deep-(not using a litter scoop but i rake weekly), i wanted to try the Forrest floor thing . So do i put the leaves on top of the sand , or should i clean it out? the dirt underneath is...
These two will be 5 weeks Monday the yellow one could use a few more feathers. I have a light for the coop when it gets below 55 or so i turn it on..so they have the option to sit under the light.. I have a Digital thermometer in the coop at floor level- wireless receiver in my kitchen. I'm...
I had a BR broody hen hatch two eggs. My 2 (4 Wk olds ) are roosting with the big girls at night! looks pretty funny . For their own safety they can hide in the cage when the hens are around. The openings are too small for the big hens. the chicks fit but are starting to get too fat . Momma...
Thanks BK!!!! for all the info regarding FF and ACV.
I started providing the ACV, FF and fresh pumpkin with seeds. They loved the stuff -Also no more runny black tar poops!
I have nine girls and regularly get 8-7 eggs a day. Nice yellow yolks since the change in feed. Also feeding it to my two...
I'm learning so much... Glad to have experienced chicken folks giving advice. I grew up on a dairy farm and we kept spring chickens but no layers. This past spring i decided to try raising a small flock I had to talk DH into it....so he
built a coop. I had a few hens that showed no signs of...
I noticed a week or more ago that one or two has black tar poop. didn't think it was big deal because i gave them a free range block with molasses . now some have watery diarrhea . They are laying and don't act sick. only symptoms is the change in poop .
Do i need to worm? (never have) i...
