Good ideas. This particular pullet is my son's, so I don't want to have to get rid of her.
I'll give 'em a try, but I'm probably 'chicken' enough to wear gloves for a while. I trained a hamster to stop nibbling, but I wore gloves for a very long time just in case. Even exploratory nibbles...
Our 7 pullets are 2.5 months old, and it's looking like their pecking order is pretty well established. They're a mix of Barred Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, a Dominique, a bantam BR and an Easter Egger. Lily, the EE, is the biggest and most mature (making hen noises while the others are...
Thanks to y'all who've taken the time to help out. I got out the camera tonight, and I think I should be posting to the "how the heck do you take a decent picture of a chicken?" forum instead!
Here's a very blurry photo of Baby Madge showing both eyes:
And here's a blurry photo of the "bad"...
I did read that whole thread (later on). I can't quite figure out the process, and am hesitant to poke anything in her mouth -- she's a baby bantam (7 weeks), and so pretty little.
My mom told me about not putting neosporin in the eye after I'd already done it. Somebody else said they'd...
Other than the eye she seems ok. no cough or runny nose, but she's content to quietly perch on my finger (her balance is fine).
She is opening the eye now --it's still really swollen and pink. I don't have the camera handy but it looks kind of like this...
I hope this isn't going to hurt her -- I tried flushing her eye with saline (the kind for people) and putting on some neomycin. That's all I can find in the house tonight. Baby Madge is sleeping in the laundry room, making baby chick whistling sounds. She ate and drank. I guess we'll see...
Baby Madge is a 6.5 weeks old Bantam Barred Rock. We noticed she kept one eye shut a couple of days ago, and today I looked closely at her. One eye is swollen pink underneath, and I see cloudy yellow stuff when I pull the eyelids apart. Nothing is oozing out. She seems listless as well.
The...
Well, I wondered about that and figured it would be about as much fun as washing a cat! But if others have done it, it must be doable.
Another question -- do bantams tend to develop their mature coloring more slowly? The regular sized BRs are much further along in the barring and feather...
Baby Madge, our Barred Rock bantam, seems to have some clumps of poop stuck to her toes. All of the other chicks (regular size) have very clean feet. Should I worry? How does one clean a 3 week old chick's feet?
Cute!!! I guess I'll have to wait a while before figuring it out (or getting upset that I have three Barred Rocks instead??)
I'm waiting for names to come to me -- whichever one is the Dom is supposed to be "White Storm" (my daughter's choice). The tan Easter Egger could well be either...
will they have comb bumps or spikes at 3 days?
Two chicks have relatively straight head spots, while one has a messy sort of blotch. Is that a way to tell rose from single combs, or is that wishful thinking?
I'm trying for pics, but they keep moving!
I've read through old messages for clues to tell them apart. We're supposed to have a bantam Barred Rock (it's tiny and adorable), 2 standard sized BRs and 1 Dominique (the EE and the Wyandottes are easy to figure). I can't figure out which is the Dom, and that's the one that my daughter chose...
Well, the question turned out to be moot, in my case at least. The heating pad didn't do much to warm up the tank (I was thinking of putting it underneath the tank, not under the pine chips), so I got a regular heatlamp and 150 w bulb. It's going to be plenty warm -- I just checked.
I did...
Interesting -- any particular reason you turn off the heat at night? I think I'll keep ours on the enclosed porch, so the light wouldn't bother anybody (except maybe the neighbors. hmm)
We're expecting 7 chicks -- fostering one for neighborhood friends, and I ordered a couple of extras (it...
Surprise! The order I thought would arrive in mid-September is coming next week! We've pulled together all the brooding supplies (10 gal aquarium, feeder, waterer, thermometer, towel, starter feed) except the heat source. I've read the posts about why not to use a heating pad, but I wonder...
