Thank you! We cleaned out the coop and my husband just ran out to get some Sevin. Hope we caught this before it infected the other chickens, but we're planning to treat them all.
When I gave my hens some scratch this afternoon, one of them didn't try to eat - she's the top of the pecking order, and it didn't appear that she was being ostracized. Her butt looked clogged, so thinking that she might be stopped up, we soaked her in some warm water and I cleaned her butt. She...
Sorry, I don't have any silkies, only bigger chickens. From what I've read on this forum, smaller chickens sometimes rule the roost! If you do put them together, expect some pecking so the year-olds let the younger ones know who's boss. There wasn't any blood drawn when I introduced the newbies...
At 3 1/2 months, they're probably pretty close in size to your year-olds. Now would be a good time. My 4-month-olds hold their own with the older hens.
Thank you so much for your feedback. My dilemma is that the brooder is off by itself with no access to the coop/run. Is three weeks old enough to let them in the roost so they have access to the run, or is that asking for trouble?
Hi all!My hen, Flopsy, hatched 4 chicks 3 weeks ago, and I've had them in a 2 X 4 brooder ever since (mama and babies). She is a wonderful mother, but it's clear that she is ready to get out. She tried to fly out yesterday when I was adding wood chips.
I'm concerned about the babies. I have 2...
You may want to try posting your question on the guinea fowl forum: http://guineafowl.com/board/list.php?2
There are lots of folks with guinea fowl experience who could probably help you.
How old are your chicks? Have they spent enough time in the coop to know that's where they're safe and where they should roost? I didn't let my first hatch out until they were 12 weeks old. Then when I let them out, they came in on their own at dusk to roost. My new birds just follow the older...
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I let the babies and mama out and immediately one of the other hens went after a chick. So now I've got the brooder set up with mama and chicks, and they seem to be content. They won't last 2 months in there, because it's only about 2' wide and 4'...
So you don't let the mama raise them? I have a fairly large brooder and could put all of them in there. If I do that, at some point will the mom want to go back outside and would I then keep the chicks alone in the brooder?
Thank you! She is very protective of the chicks, but let's me pick them up. Maybe that's because I petted her several times every day while she was on the nest! Since the babies aren't afraid of me, I thought they might not be afraid of the other hens. But you're right - she won't let the others...
Good morning! My broody hen just hatched 4 chicks 2 days ago - yeah! They're adorable! Anyway, I have them in a large cat carrier which is in the hen house. I have 6 other chickens who need access to the hen house. Should I keep mama and her babies in the cage? Or is it safe to let her take them...
I have a broody hen and no roosters, so I thought it would be fun to get some fertile eggs for her. I have 2 shipments coming, one tomorrow and one Monday or Tuesday. I think I should wait until I receive all the eggs before I put them under the hen, right? How should I keep the 6 I'm getting...
