    What breeds should I get?

I had one Cochin and would love another one. EEs are good all around chickens and do not go broody. I have had one that was “friendly” and would jump up to take treats. i Have marans right now and love their egg color and texture. I have 3 Mille fleurs now and they are the sweetest, most...

Broody hens and other chicken’s eggs

my broody hens somehow end up with the other chicken’s eggs to sit on. I can tell because everyone lays different colored eggs. How do they physically get other eggs into a whole different nest box?

Do you guys vaccinate your chickens?

I had two chickens die of Mareks disease and it was very sad. I got them from a private breeder and was not aware they were not vaccinated. That is the only chicken vaccine I know of, and I will always make sure any new ones I get have had it.

Thank you -- think I'll take her to a vet so I can see if it's something that will affect the others too.

    cochin with respiratory iillness

My cochin (my favorite!) seems to have a respiratory illness. This started two nights ago. I have isolated her from the rest of the flock. (I only have a small flock of 5) None of the rest are showing any symptoms. She has no sign of mucus or discharge or any other external signs. She is...

What is your friendliest Chicken? What breed is it?

Blondie, my buff cochin is the friendliest. She's quite a character, and she and my dog Miley are special friends too. I use a photo of them as my avatar from when Blondie was quite a bit younger. This is a fun thread. I have enjoyed reading through it and seeing everyone's photos. Doesn't...

19 week old australorp acting strangely

As it all turned out, she was getting ready to lay the first egg but because I was new to chickens didn't recognize the signs. The turkeys had nothing to do with it! Silly me.

Thanks so much for replying. I only have a few chickens, and just one Cochin which is more of a pet really, but am interested in adding another next year be because they seem like a very charming breed. I am also interested in speckled Sussex.

How to Keep Chickens From being Bored

Today I put a medium-sized dog kennel into the run, the kind with the handle for carrying. All morning the chickens have been going in and out of it, pecking at the bottom of it, and seeming generally very entertained by it. It was just happenstance that I put it in there, I was releasing...

19 week old australorp acting strangely

This afternoon my 19 week old australorp starting acting strange suddenly. A flock of wild turkeys had flown into the yard, my dogs were chasing them, and there was a big commotion. During this, the hens were all hiding under the coop. (their run is completely enclosed.) The australorp kept...

chickens don't seem to be eating their food

Today I mixed the pellets with some kefir-soaked oats, a favorite treat of theirs, along with some leftover blackberries. They were much more interested in eating today. I was glad to hear that other people have had this issue and it resolved itself. Thanks for your input.
