    Raised Run suggestions

Hi, We've bought property that used to be a plant nursery. There are a few old Greenhouses remaining and we're going to put them to good use soon. I don't want my chickens pecking the dirt because its likely still full of nursery chemicals. Instead I want to build a raised coop and run system...

    HELP! Possible Marek's In Flock.

I was just about to post something similar here. I found this article on BYC's. Maybe it will answer all of our questions. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/the-great-big-giant-mareks-disease-faq

    White dusty looking head feathers

I haven't been able to find this on the google machine. I have 1 Rhode Island Red and 2 Red Stars #1 they haven't laid a single egg in about a month #2 we let them free range as often as possible and have plenty of underbrush that they love to go through. We've had them locked up for 2...

    Free range, eggs missing!

Sigh. I've been letting my chickens free range exclusively for 2 weeks now. We have a fenced one acre with some brush and high piles of oak leaves near their pen. Before, we let them out every few days to free range. We had a chicken die in the pen and I wanted them to "air out" in hopes that it...

Moulting for 4 months now! Lost blood feathers?!

oh, They aren't exclusively free range. Up to this point they are in the pen (which is roomy) most of the week. I let them out once or twice for several hours when I can watch them. We're situated on 1 acre and a good bit of it has plenty of shade (oak trees and underbrush). plenty of oak leaves...

Moulting for 4 months now! Lost blood feathers?!

Thanks so much. I'll research the collars too. And I think I'm going to let them free range from early morning to late evening. They go back to the coop fairly easily. We've got good soil and tons of bugs. I can get crickets pretty cheaply too. I think those might be a good source of protein.

Moulting for 4 months now! Lost blood feathers?!

Yes, her feathers are missing just like the bird in the picture. So what to do? Anything other than give her more protein? Come to think of it, I don't see any feathers in the coop or pen. so you are likely right about it being her. Is this a nervous/anxiety condition in the bird? Thanks so much

Moulting for 4 months now! Lost blood feathers?!

I haven't noticed that she's plucking herself. And too little food would only be because she chose not to eat. Its harvest season so they've had access to plenty of table food scraps. Watermelon, cantelope, cucumbers, squash, plenty of garden goodies in addition to their regular feed. I did an...

Moulting for 4 months now! Lost blood feathers?!

I have a chicken who has been moulting for 4 months now. She's lost almost all of her feathers. She did have blood feathers coming in for a while, but she's lost those as well. There are 3 other chickens all the same age who have not moulted yet, and have full feathers. This one doesn't act...

    Moulting for 3 months?

Let me elaborate a bit more. What I mean to say is she seems to be stuck in this state. Is it normal to have blood feathers for 2 or more months? The feathers don't seem to be coming in any further than that.

    Moulting for 3 months?

I have a chicken who started moulting 3 months ago. She now has bare breasts that look sunburned and dry. Her stomach all the way around to her tail feathers have grown what looks to be 2 inch incomplete feathers. They are just spiky and sparse. Most of her flesh is bare. I have 3 other...

    Moulting for 3 months?

I have a red star chicken and she started moulting about 3 months ago. I didn't think too much of it. But she hasn't grown any feathers back. She has featherless red breasts that look sunburned and some partially grown in feathers from the sides of her breast line all the way around the...
