I have 7 raised beds, each with a 3 foot fence around it, they never go in. I have other gardens protected the same way. Once perennials get established not to bad. But try planting grass seed, this can be nuts. Buy a hay type matt at Lowes they come in rolls, they will keep the little beaks...
I think sporting breeds in general might be risky, I have had two hunting springers and I doubt it would have worked out. Our Bichon gets along fine with our chickens, it really depends on the breed and probably training to some extent.
I was wondering how you tell the Buff's apart haha, we have one very sweet, had a Barred Rock who died two years ago, still have total of 4, enough for us, love the names, we have a Betty btw (also Little Peep, Maxine, and Bilma)
good ideas, my girls free range all winter, they are waiting to get out at 7:30 am in all but the worst Vermont weather. We have a a fenced in yard and a porch where they can go under and get protection from rain or snow, they are a lucky 4 girls. We give them leftovers as you suggest a couple...
you should write a book, this is really good stuff, we have three, they are quite social too, one fly's up onto my wife's head once in awhile, go figure, chickens are awesome, wish I knew this years ago while the kids were young.
Get a good mat and keep it by the door to clean your shoes. Also, I do not agree bigger is better, it all depends on how many chickens you want, how much room you have, where you live, all that. Oh, and if you name them, like we did, they become pets, fast.
I think you are so right, we live in Vermont, 3 little girls, they get by just fine, if it is really cold, or they are moulting, we take notice, otherwise they are fine and happy
thankyou, my main concern, believe it or not, is just not letting them out of the coop for 10 days, its probably more my own emotions then the girls. We have someone checking in twice a day anyway because we have two cats as well. Should I feel guilty letting my free range girls stay cooped up...
I realize your post is two years old, we are going away for ten days, and we have three chickens that hang around the yard everyday, then back in the coop at night. Should we take your lock down approach, and just keep them in the coop while we are gone, I feel guilty as hell, but not sure what...
