vacation

I have a young man down the road who comes down and feeds and waters for me.

I realize your post is two years old, we are going away for ten days, and we have three chickens that hang around the yard everyday, then back in the coop at night. Should we take your lock down approach, and just keep them in the coop while we are gone, I feel guilty as hell, but not sure what else to do, i appreciate any advice

going on vacation is tricky business. i' going to be gone 5 days in august. i'm getting an automatic door, i'm going to have a pvc feeder that holds alot, and i'm going to have a watering system that works for long periods of time. then i'm going to ask someone to just come by once a day & look at things & see if everything is ok.
i'm hoping that way i won't worry about food, water, or someone coming twice a day to let them out & put them up at night.

thankyou, my main concern, believe it or not, is just not letting them out of the coop for 10 days, its probably more my own emotions then the girls. We have someone checking in twice a day anyway because we have two cats as well. Should I feel guilty letting my free range girls stay cooped up for 10 days and not wander around the yard as they always do, ??

do they have a run they can be confined to or just the coop? being in the coop for that long would be hard, but better than dead. a run is reasonable. they get a little outside time, but have a decent amount of safety. imo

thanks for your reply, if you look at my Avatar, that is the coop, so they have plenty of outside time, and we only have 3, does that look ok ?

btw, the total size of the run on the ground is about 4 x 8 feet, the actual coop or living space is in the upper part, appreciate any advice

@Pixelvt how did that work out for you? I'm going on vacation as well. Our coop is roughly 12x8 feet so there's enough room to wander but they free range most days and I feel guilty

I know this is an old thread but this is my concern.

I have the food and water set up pretty nicely that my 6 girls will be fine.

Can the eggs and the poop in the coop build up for 4 days?

Only you can answer that...

Eggs should not be an issue.

Assuming proper ventilation, birds will not mind the extra poop either.
