Any Fancy breeds that are good egg producers?

I am fairly new to chickens and I was just thinking of egg production when I got my hens. They are beautiful and I love everyone of them but are there any "fancy" chickens that are still good egg producers?

HUGE flaw with automatic coop door

Thank you Kelsie, I'm going to take it as a learning experience and be more aware of weak points in my coop and run. I didn't want to blast the company I bought the door from since there are other companies that produce a door that is similarly designed. Thanks for the hug.

HUGE flaw with automatic coop door

SERIOUS flaw with an automatic Chicken door!!! I just lost 4 chickens (including my sweet little Light) because I did not recognize a HUGE flaw with the automatic chicken door that I purchased 2 years ago. The door is pulled up and let down by a cable and it was easily lifted by the raccoon. I...

Have an amazing rooster but just discovered another hen is a rooster

Hi Chickies, I have an absolutely amazing rooster that was given to me. He is protective of his flock and keeps an eye on us humans but is never aggressive. I never thought of having a Barred Rock rooster but I have to say I am blessed to have this gentleman watching over the flock. But...

    Friendliest domestic fowl

I got lucky with a Barred Rock rooster that was given to me. He has turned out to be a true gentleman to his hens. Plus he is calm around us but he does watch us like a hawk. If any of his ladies squawks he immediately comes running with a look of "what's wrong? Are you ok?"

Are mealworms really safe for chicks and grown chickens?

I purchased a starter kit of Mealworms and the colony is growing slowly but ever time I have fed to the chickens and they go nuts. 5 weeks of occasionally tasty meal worm treats and everyone seems happy and healthy. I feed the meal worms healthy whole grains and wheat bread. All is good so far.

    Friendliest domestic fowl

I guess a little luck is involved. My shy little Light Brahma is now (much bigger and) the motherly hen that can stop fights and protect the underdogs. Yes she still loves to be held when I enter the coop or run. But will instantly want to protect her younger friends if trouble arises.

One of the 15 are laying soft shelled

I have one Wellsummer that consistently lays a soft egg and it gets stomped on. I am hoping she will see the calcium in both baked and smashed shells or the oyster shells and it will help her. Plus I am now finding eggs that are layed out in the chicken run. Put they are in safe places and...

    Super thin shell

My hens are still young and 4 have started laying. The shells have all been strong except for one Wellsummer Her little white eggs have all been very soft shelled and stepped on or squashed in some way. I am giving them plenty of calcium. Both crushed egg shell and oyster shells. I am hoping...

    Beak Wiping Behavior

I go with plotting against mankind. We are so arrogant to believe we are the smartest species. REALLY!?!?! We work our butts off every day to give our animals the best! Who is really the smartest in this equation? (Of course they are so darn cute we have no choice in the matter.)

    Bully chicken- seriously evil

BTW, the first rooster turned out to be stew. He was extremely abusive. The hens were scared of him.

    Bully chicken- seriously evil

My Light Brahma is the sweetest chicken I have ever known. She loves my attention and stays at my feet every time I am in the run. But she was part of a second purchase and younger than the first group. She was bullied by the 4 Black sex links. I felt so bad. She and the other chicks were...

    ORDERING LOCALLY raised chicks

I work at China Lake and I purchased a nice variety of Chicks from the hardware store in Inyokern. All turned out to be hens although one turned out to be a different breed than what I thought it was. All were healthy and may start laying any day now. I can't wait!

Any idea what she is? She is a very friendly chicken. I just wish she didn't like pecking my toes so much.
