Your hens will lay eggs no matter what. If they are in the "tractor" they will just find a spot and lay the egg. The problem with that is that the egg will probably get trampled on since it could be sitting anywhere in their way. A solution to this is to just have a wooden shoe box or...
Knowing how I am...I'd put them on the pullets and then forget about them...and then the chickens would grow and I'd wind up cutting circulation off from their legs. I think I would forget to check the fit of any type of band.
For the life of me...I just can't imagine giving a chicken a bath!!!!! I could hold em...sure. Pet em..yeah ok. But bathing them???? I would think I'd need atleast 10 helpers to keep the chicken in tub.
I was curious about how you assert your "alpha" over pecker. I can't have roosters in my township...but my oldest hen did take over the alpha position in my flock, second to me.
Again...just curious more than anything else..
On a side note..he really is a cute roo..
I have pasted this post so many times it automatically pops up in my browser now...lol. Probably the best information out there!
Thanks so much for posting it. =)
Plexiglass shutters sound great because they will still let in the light. I live in PA and at our coldest point we get below 0 F ...so trust me when I say...most breeds of chicken can deal with cold just fine without closing off their ventilation. They have feathers to keep them warm and burn...
This is actually "Patandchickens" coop...the Lady who wrote that ventilation post and is also from Ontario. But I'm sure she appreciates the compliment. This is her tractor..and I think she wound up adding some "openings" too it
I posted it so you could see what someone from your area does...
I can't find the post right now...but there is another member who made a cute little blue coop with the clear panel roof as her whole roof. Right now she is having problems keeping the coop cool in full sun. Some suggestions to her where to paint the clear panels a solid paint color (the...
Cute coop! It totally looks like a blue chicken and the front legs are too cute!
You don't really say what kind of winter you'll be dealing with...so I'll just use my climate for example.
One winter we got 24 inches of snow in one night and then two days later another 18 on top of that...
My suggestion is to send a message to this guy....he actually performs the operation so he'd be most able to tell you. The post is one he put up on here to teach others how to do the procedure. Don't read the post if you're squeamish....just click on his name to contact him...
Truthfully 18" would be fine...you could round up to 2' to make the wood math easy Mostly the only thing to keep in mind is how YOU want to deal with the ground under there.
There will be poop...lol...so you will probably want to hose it out...rake it out...or something like that. So, decide...
When I saw the pic I gasped and my mind instantly went into "what I'd do" mode...
I agree with the other folks here...this is a fantastic item. Check the roof...patch up any rotted or broken wood..predator proof...some paint..and WOW.
I also agree that in an area that big...it would totally...
This is EXCELLENT!!!! I love the roof and the vinyl window covers. Very well thought out and very efficient! I have a stationary coop..but will need something similar to this for my "run" so I will be revisiting your page often =)
