Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hey, I was thinking the same thing, or maybe alien abduction? All the Pa chicken people have vanished!!! I'm busy too, but I still hop on here everyday to read the chicken gossip with coffee

. Blarneyeggs, Rodriguezpoultry, where have you gone???

Heather, good luck at the fair!! What is she showing? I'm thinking of putting my daughter in 4-H, She's been in Girl Scouts for 6 years, but she's been wanting to show chickens. Problem is I don't know the first thing about it. I have a lot of chickens, but don't know what would constitute show quality?

Thank you for the luck!!! We will need it I am sure. I think she is going to show a Black Ameraucana Hen, and a Splash Sumatra pullet. Maybe even just one of those two. We don't know the first thing about showing either. We are going to be learning together. I was in 4-H and girl scouts. I liked 4-H a lot better. Your daughter would love it. Figuring out if you have something show quality, I hear you...................I am going to be getting a Standard of Perfection very soon so I can figure that all out. You can try to borrow it from the library.

I really don't know what happened to everybody????? I know summer is really busy for a lot of people, but I am a stay-at-home chicken farmer and mom. I like BYC better then FB!

Heather, how did the bird bathing go? I haven't shown yet, but hear the trick is to keep them caged and on shavings afterward, otherwise they run directly to their favorite dusting spot and ruin all your hard work!

Our county hasn't had a poultry club in the 4H in 20 years and started one this year. We are trying to throw together a show. No cages yet, still trying to figure the whole process out. I would love to have my own Standard of Perfection. Great for referencing, but for now, I compare my birds against the ones posted on the threads here, and ask the experts on those threads what they think of my birds.

Hannacat, I don't have meal worms, but that is a generous offer. Bummer that you've got to buy in such large quantities.

Gargeninmama, how's your hatch going?

The bathing went really well. I have a dog bathtub and that's where we did the bath. I did a little bit of non traditional things. Most books say to have at least 3 pals with water in them, pal 1 shampoo in the water, pal 2 vinegar water rinse, pal 3 final rinse. The vinegar water is supposed to remove all the soap so the feathers don't look funky.

This is what I did. I use this stuff on myself, dogs, horses, and now chickens.

No pals of water!!! Rinse chicken to get excess dirt off feet or wherever there is soiling. Shampoo with Cowboy Magic Rosewater Shampoo, rinse and repeat. When you repeat you use only the amount of a quarter, you get so many bubbles it wicked cool. Then I used the Cowboy Magic Rosewater Conditioner, it removes all soap residue. The chicken was black, so I didn't need to use the Cowboy Magic Green Spot remover, or the Cowboy Magic Shine in Yellow Out. I would use those on the lighter colored ones. After the bath I did blow dry her because I wanted to finish the grooming. That was fun!!!! When she was dry I sprayed Cowboy Magic Super Body Shine OMG, she looked Amazing!!! Then on the feet and comb I used the Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine. No oily residues, and it didn't dry out the chickens skin and she looked great! For the bad news, I totally didn't get a picture, and she is all dirty again! I forgot to say that I used an old toothbrush on her feet and legs.........

For the life of me...I just can't imagine giving a chicken a bath!!!!! I could hold em...sure. Pet em..yeah ok. But bathing them???? I would think I'd need atleast 10 helpers to keep the chicken in tub.

If anyone is looking for smaller quantities of wheat bran for their meal worm farms, I have some to sell.  If you live anywhere near 15009 (Beaver) Pa and need some, let me know.

I can mail it if you are willing to pay the shipping.  I couldn't find anywhere local that sold less than 50 lbs and I got tired of buying it off of Ebay so I broke down and got the big bag... hahaaaa

Hanna, if you have any LDS near you, you can contact them to find out who their local canner is. They dry can in #10 cans. I did this with 25 lbs of rice and 25 lbs of oatmeal I had that I didn't want to go bad before I needed all of it!

Fall Asleep? Missy, how long do you have them in there? Do you submerge them? I'm going to have to u-tube chicken bathing now.

For those of you on the Far SouthEast side of PA who need some showing exposure (this would be me) ~ I spoke to a woman yesterday who is showing her chooks in the Cecil County Fair at the end of this month. I plan to go just to get a feel for how big the cages are, what the judges are looking at, ect. I think the dates are July 20~28th. Cecil County is in Maryland. A hop and a skip for me.

The Foxes are still terrorizing us! They are out mid~day, grabbed an EE pullet at 2pm one afternoon. I think maybe a kit training? I screamed and it dropped the pullet, the pullet is fine, and unfortunately so is the fox. DH is a terrible shot. He goes out every night at dusk and NADA. No fox slippers for me.

I've got 2 broody. Our favorite hen, 'Popcorn' sitting on 4 Marans eggs and 3 Maran/Leghorn cross and a Silkie sitting on 3 MF Cochin eggs.

Here's my current broody with a Blue English Orp (we think roo) popping his head out. (I thought we needed a pic on this page)

!!! Blarney, I will be there. Please let me know which days you'll be there. Maybe a chicken swap by then? Cecil County is about 45 min. from me.
As for that fox, trap it. DH won't miss then. I love foxes, just not on my property. No Holds Barred, Right?
