re: carton method, cut the bottoms out?

I'm not sure how much it helps, but I cut holes in the bottom. Either way I don't think you will be disappointed with the method. I am currently hatching tonight already have got one blue jersey giant out of the shell! Hopefully I will post pics here in the next couple of days. I cut a small...

Breeding Broadbreasted Bronze w/ Standard Bronze to avoid artificial

That is something I didn't consider. What color did your Royal Palm Bronze Crosses come out? My Standard Bronzes aren't mature yet, but my Royal Palm Toms are so maybe I should keep them around and try to breed them next year with BB. Royal Palm Hens should be laying in the next 2 weeks.

Breeding Broadbreasted Bronze w/ Standard Bronze to avoid artificial

Hi, I was thinking about getting a broad breasted turkey hen and mating it with one of my standard bronze toms. Do you think it would yield a bigger turkey than a standard bronze without artificial insemination? I understand the broad breasted toms can't mate due to a large breast, but another...

    D.E. What is it?

Mypicklebird ..I have read up on this stuff it is safe. This is the same stuff. You swim in the water after it passes through it, it will not harm anything in the right amounts. I treat it like oyster shell with a dust mask on when I use it. People here on the board had pointed me to the...

    D.E. What is it?

D.E. is diatamaceous earth. It is ground up flour made from diatomite fossils found in the ocean. It works on a microscopic scale by lacerating the mite or worm that comes in contact with it and cutting it open so it can dehydrate. It is harmless to eat(not breath) and I use it everywhere in...

    Diatomaceous Earth

I gave up finding food grade locally and settled for plain old diatomite from a pool store a few towns over. I have been feeding it for 6 months and have had no mites, no worms, and no deaths. That stuff weighs so much it was unpractical to get it shipped in as much as I would be using. I...

Is there something wrong with my Royal Palm Turkeys?

I am glad to report that my turkeys are getting better. The swelling has subsided in two of my Turkeys and the other two are getting better each day. I tried the Sulfamethodoxine (spelling) soluble powder and that did nothing. I researched some more on the forum and someone had recommended to...

    Chicks...by mail...really?

You sound like me at the farm store in the spring. Its like a kid in a candy store when you get all of those choices. A little of this, a little of that next thing you know you have some of everything in your box and you have to put some back. I have mail ordered through Cackle Hatchery and...

A humane way to handle male chicks?

Most likely they will meet their end in a stew pot, but you shouldn't feel bad about that. Feel good that the chicken you are eating had a chance to see the sun, have grass between its toes, eat bugs, and get lucky with the ladies;) Those fake factory chickens in the grocery store are the ones...

    Candled the eggs....

I keep my incubator in my living room closet. The cats don't even know its there and it keeps me from seeing it constantly and thinking about hatch day! Also it keeps it free from drafts.

    Testing Fertility

Good luck with your hatch. I am putting some EE's in today that I got from Leah and I just hatched 7 barred rocks last week. I have never hatched quail, so that should be fun. I understand they have a much shorter incubation time and you have to grind the starter feed for them. So tiny...

    Carton Method

Oh! I'm sorry. When we are talking about the egg carton method, we mean the 3 days before the hatch. I use automatic turners until then. Then I place them in the bottom part (egg cup portion) of a egg carton where I do not turn them. I guess if you didn't have a turner you could prop them up...

How do I get the membrane off?

I had this problem with a baby Royal Palm Turkey that hatched my first time. I let it go and stay on there. It looked butt ugly for a couple of weeks, but it feathered out. Look like someone snotted on it. I wouldn't see the problem of taking a clean warm rag and wiping it off, just as long...
