One of our hens just started limping really badly yesterday. If she's in a hurry, she'll hop on her one good foot, but otherwise, she slowly walks/limps. It looks really painful, but she's still able to get around. I think one of my kids shut the gate to the chicken yard too soon, and caught her...
So I think we solved our mystery. We set up a camera in the coop, since they tend to be shy about laying when anyone's around. One of our production reds laid an egg, and then almost immediately after, the EE went in and laid one! This is the first time we've gotten two eggs in one day so I'm...
Awesome! So, is 5-6 weeks typical for them to reach a normal size? Or is there even a typical? :) Our egg today was noticeably bigger than the last one we got (2 days ago).
So, what is an RSL? Same as Red Star??? Our Red Stars and Production Reds are pretty large, or maybe they just seem so big because our EE is so small. :) We've been really happy with all of our chickens so far. I can't wait for the jumbo eggs to start coming!
Okay, so it's probably one of the Red Stars. That is great news! I just assumed it was the EE because there was one afternoon (probably the 2nd day we got an egg) where she sat in the far corner of the coop where we've found all the brown eggs for at least 1 1/2 hours. Then right after that she...
I also think it's two separate chickens, but my husband is not convinced. Says he won't believe until we get two eggs in one day. :) So, we'll see what happens today.
We only have 1 EE. Our others are Production Reds and Red Stars (from what I've been told). But, I would love to get another...
One of our chickens started laying last Saturday (an Easter Egger that is sadly laying brown eggs...my kids were so excited for colorful eggs...) Anyway, I know the color can vary- lighter and darker, but can the eggs be THIS much lighter? Every day we get a dark brown egg, but 2 days ago we got...
We got our first 2 eggs this weekend!!! (at 16 weeks 6 days) The eggs are dark brown, so we're thinking they're from one of the Production Reds or Red Stars, but they're so so tiny, it makes me wonder. I've always heard the Reds lay jumbo eggs. Maybe they'll get bigger? Either way, we are so...
Just saw this...thank you for your reply! I keep thinking it's too early (they are 16 weeks today), but then I go watch them and I think they could start laying soon. The big one in the top picture has started digging holes in the dirt to sit in. And she and one other pullet make noise...
We have 5 hens that are all 15 weeks old. Four of them are red varieties...from what I've been told Production Red and Red Star. The fifth is an Easter Egger.
We also had 3 Red cockerels that we've gotten rid of. As soon as we got rid of them (about 3 weeks ago) one of the hens got noticeably...
Good to know....I'd never heard about the differences in face. We were just guessing based on size and which ones had big combs. Really hoping we end up with 4 hens out of the 9....which, from the above, it sounds like we might!
Very helpful! Thank you! Yes, the chicken my son is holding is the same as the one in the second picture. And we suspected that both black/red ones are roosters but my husband is really hoping that one is a hen. :) So, can I ask, how you can tell the difference??? Are the cockerels just...
We are brand new to all things chicken. My daughter's class hatched a bunch of chicks and we brought them home on a whim. This has all been a huge, but fun learning experience. We have 9 chickens that are just about 7 weeks old. We have no idea what breed they are or the gender, though I know...
