    Sick chickens

So, a few days ago I noticed my GLW was a little slow, just not too excited about treats when I threw them out. She'd eat, but not with her normal gusto. Yesterday I found her in the bushes, very lethargic, not eating or drinking. We put her in a box and kept her overnight in the garage...

Mabel and the Wayward chicken chorus present the egg song.

My GLW Mabel is hopping mad that Betty and Hazel dare to tie up the 2 nesting boxes. She came to the back door to let me know. The other girls join in.

Easter Egger or Ameraucana, still confused.

We got her from The Urban Farm Store in Portland. They were selling as Ameraucana, but is she? That's her second egg.

Beautiful night to sit with the girls

Spending my evening on the deck with the girls. LaLa, aka devil chicken. Always curious always talking. Mabel, quiet and a bit standoffish but always nearby Miss Betty, alpha chicken. A quiet and fair leader. Sweet and mild tempered. Hazel, counting down to her first egg...

    Egg frustration

My first problem is that the 3 laying hens (14 months) have slowed down to almost no eggs. I've been searching the back yard looking for a hidden nest because I'm not getting the 2-3 eggs per day that's normal. My second problem is that I've found a couple eggs broken and eaten either in the...

    What's your favorite cookbook?

I love to cook and am always looking for new cookbooks. The other day while visiting a friend she made grilled pork tacos from a recipe out of "America's Test Kitchen" cookbook from the tv series 2011-2013. I immediately went out and bought it. It's mammoth to be sure, I recently dislocated my...

My young cuckoo marans keeps laying her eggs off her roost

My Cuckoo Marans has recently started laying. Unfortunately she's only laid one in the nest box. The others have all been from her roost in the run. I found another one this morning that the girls had eaten. Is there some way I can break her of this? I know she knows where the nest boxes...

    First double yolk egg

I'm not sure which one did it, but I got my first double yolk egg. I weighed it, it was 2.5 oz.

Trying to introduce 2 to my flock of 3

Hi all- I'll gladly accept advice, but more than anything, I just need to send this out to the universe as it's stressing me out. I hand raised my first 3 girls (in pecking order- Buff Orpington, Golden Laced Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex), they've literally been handled every day of their 1...

My goofy Sussex just popped out an egg in front of me.

Just as I was getting ready to go into the house, my Sussex LaLa started walking funny. I stopped and ran my hand along her back thinking she was constipated then, pop(!), out came an egg. Not a sound, and at 7pm. Little weirdo.
