    Blood in my duck's egg!?!

First of all, don't stress about the blood. From our over 1 year experience with the two laying ducks, the blood tapered off very quickly...matter of a couple months. We attributed it to their young age and their bodies normalizing to laying eggs. We have had an occasional egg that had a...

Havn't posted our egg laying status since they started in December

Happy Campbell family. Well, it has been over 5 months of egg laying since they began on December 1, 2012...and can't complain about how many they've laid either. What started out as concern about delayed laying has been great...and it's funny because I commented to my wife that if the girls...

    Blood in my duck's egg!?!

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear. It was not intended to be a light, but simply a heat lamp without the light part. But I have had two heat lamps blow in weeks rather than months. I have to have some way to have heat at night...we are already have lows in the 20's at night. So, for...

    Blood in my duck's egg!?!

Not sure if we have a slightly different problem. We have 3 (at least one is a drake...not 100% sure the other two are both girls either) WH/KC that are about 25 weeks old. We have been getting eggs for almost 3 weeks. Pretty sure that both girls are laying now because of two obvious size...

Will Welsh & Khaki hybrid cause delay in first time laying?

Yeah, first egg! On December 1st we have our first egg. Not sure which of the two girls yet, but will worry about that over the next few days. Now my family doesn't have to worry about my making duck dinner for Christmas

Will Welsh & Khaki hybrid cause delay in first time laying?

Well, they are approx. 24 weeks old now and no eggs yet. I am hopeful they start soon, but I now assuming that since they were a early summer chick and we have had early cold weather, that they may have some delay still. I have joked with my wife and son that if no eggs by Christmas, we can at...

Will Welsh & Khaki hybrid cause delay in first time laying?

Very good to know. The drake is definitely doing the head bob thing, and at least one of the girls too. He has even been climbing on their backs when they are in their water, from time to time. So, they are reaching some level of maturity. Thanks.

Will Welsh & Khaki hybrid cause delay in first time laying?

Thanks. I think I remember reading something like that too, now that you mention it. I was just concerned because early reading suggested that I would see eggs somewhere after 17 weeks, and when we hit 20 still no eggs. Further reading indicated maybe even 24 weeks. I am just surprised by...

Will Welsh & Khaki hybrid cause delay in first time laying?

OK, I have read a few different answers on this forum about when ducks first lay, but most of them involve pure bred ducks. But we brought home a couple Welsh/Khaki's the last week of June this year. FYI, it appears that the drake looks most like his Welsh father and the girls will probably...

    Love My Khaki Campbell Ducks

Finally getting around posting pics of our Welsh & Campbell mix ducks. The person we got ours from had a drake Welsh and duck Campbell. So, we wound up with 1 Welsh Harlequin drake and 2 Khaki Campbells. We have them just about 20 weeks...they are so funny, especially when they are in the water.

what is this gross thing in the duck pen? *pic*

I have no idea why I had to look at this post just before eating a late lunch...but my lunch is going to be a little later now too. Never heard of this before, but I am glad I did so I may not be worried if I see it in the pin sometime in the future. They are just like children...we worry...

Has anyone seen "The Million Dollar duck?"

Yes, when I was a child. And again a few months ago when we picked it up at the public library for my 10-year-old son. That is a contributing factor to us now having 2 ducks and a drake. Beware of what you allow your children to watch...it will cost you somehow.

New to ducks, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I have to say that I really, really, like how you make your coop and the yard look so friendly...does it make them feel like they have a home instead of just a place to sleep? Next spring, we hope to make ours look a little nicer, rather than just functional as it is right now.

Will ducks walk thru a plastic wind barrier on the coop?

Well I hung a piece of trash bag (white) down to cover the opening, with slits in it so that it was almost too flippy in the air to even work, and guess what? They were so freaked out by it they went nuts in the coop the first time I rousted them thru the other door. I had to take it down a...

Will ducks walk thru a plastic wind barrier on the coop?

The plastic is only for the door inside the long covered area. The outside door is only open during the day when we are home. Otherwise, they are locked down inside the coop and long covered area. Since this inside door is open for them I merely wanted a soft wind break until winter when...

Will ducks walk thru a plastic wind barrier on the coop?

Well the first night didn't go so well with the plastic up. They freaked out when they went into the coop. I had to move some of the strips out of the way so they could see their food on the other side. Hopefully I can introduce more of it closed each night over the next week or so.

Comment by 'ekdesign1' in article 'Small Duck Coop With Re Purposed Materials'

They seem to be happy, especially when they get to play in the water. And, yes I was thrilled to not have to spend additional money upfront except for chick feed and some bedding materials.

Small Duck Coop With Re Purposed Materials

This coop began it's life as a 3x4 dog house that our 50lb dog walked into and out of twice and never went into again. I took one side of the roof off and installed two hinges...I use bolts thru the lid to keep it raccoon proof. I removed one of the fake side windows and re-framed it and put...
