Hey everyone! Not sure if this is where I should post this but we are thinking of moving to Alaska from CA and we currently have 3 hens. Is it possible to raise chickens in Alaska especially during the winter? I love our girls and would hate to have to get rid of them.
Any input would be...
Hello all,
We are in the process of introducing two RIRs (7 mos.) with our two barred rocks (11 mos.). The smaller BR is fine with the two RIRs, but the biggest one is a bit feisty. How much aggression is acceptable pecking order stuff and when should we step in and stop the mayhem? The...
For the past couple of weeks, our RIR doesn't seem to want to roost with the Barred Rocks in the coop. When we go to secure their coop at night, 3 to 4 nights a week we'll find her in the corner of their yard on the ground instead of in the coop on the roost. We'll go ahead and put her up in...
We were using cat litter buckets but have switched to a portable modular bucket with a lid. The front lip is high enough that they haven't been able to kick their shavings out and it gives them more room to move around. They seem to really enjoy it!

Thanks for the idea. We're going to try this because today they were carrying on for about 15 - 20 minutes non-stop. I heard them from our front yard so I know the neighbors aren't having any problem hearing them
I have the same problem with my 3 girls. Since we live in the city and close to our neighbors, I'm certain we'll get the phone call. Ours will go on for 15 to 20 minutes easily. Would love to know what they are saying :o)
Thanks for all the feedback. We love our girls, they are very gentle and sweet, and we don't mind their chit chat. I just know from experience that not everyone feel the same.
Do to the squawking my girls make in the morning, we may have to switch breeds. We have 2 BR and 1 RIR. Are there any type of hens that are quiet? Mine really squawk in the mornings and I know my neighbor will eventually complain. They are the noisiest between 6:45 - 9:00am which is a...
That's a great analogy. Never thought of it like that. Only problem is that once our BR is off the nest, no one goes in and lays any eggs. Our RIR is probably just bossy!
Whenever my Barred Rock, Poppy, is on her nest, our RIR, Ginger tries to get on it with her and they end up making a huge racket. And if she isn't trying to squeeze in there with her, she stands outside of the nest squawking. Is this normal? We have two nest boxes and only 3 pullets. Could...
We live in San Diego by the coast and I was wondering if our girls roost and nest buckets should be enclosed? We currently have boards nailed to the upper part of the coop in two corners to block the breeze. Since it's starting to get colder, I was wondering if we should enclose the whole...
